🚨 How many code violations can YOU spot? Let us count them...
This photo was taken during a routine dryer vent cleaning — and it's a perfect example of why as a CSIA C-DET certified company we do more than just clean your vent. We're trained to identify fire hazards hiding in plain sight.
Here's what we found in this one connection:
1️⃣ Vinyl/plastic transition duct — never code compliant
Vinyl tears easily, melts under heat, and cannot handle dryer exhaust temperatures. It's a fire waiting to happen.
2️⃣ Flexible duct used in a concealed space
IRC Section M1502 and IMC Section 504 are clear: all ductwork running through concealed spaces (like crawlspaces, walls, or floors) must be rigid metal. Flex of any kind is prohibited in these areas.
3️⃣ Regular duct tape instead of UL 181-listed tape
Standard duct tape fails under heat and eventually falls apart. Code requires UL 181B-FX listed aluminum foil tape for dryer duct connections — not the gray stuff from the hardware store.
4️⃣ Undersized gauge metal duct
IRC M1502 requires a minimum thickness of 0.0157" — that's No. 28 gauge for steel or No. 26 gauge for aluminum. What you see here is flimsy, lightweight aluminum clearly below that threshold. Thin walls crush easily, restrict airflow, and accumulate lint.
