October ends today, and the ribbons come down.

Treatment does not run on a calendar. Somebody in McKinney starts chemo in February and nothing about their month is pink.

On the days you cannot do all of it, there is an order that helps.

Start with the things that get worse on their own. Anything in the sink or on the counter. The trash, before it needs a second bag. Wet towels and whatever is sitting in the washer. The litter box and the pet bowls.

Those are the only things with a clock on them.

Everything else is just sitting there. Dust does not spoil. Clutter does not spread. The floor will be the same floor next week. It looks urgent because it is visible, not because it is actually getting worse.

And when you do have twenty minutes, pick one surface, not one room. Clearing the kitchen counter changes how the entire house feels and takes ten minutes. Cleaning the whole kitchen takes two hours you do not have today.

Tired is not a character flaw, and the dishes are not a measure of how well you are handling any of this.

The guest room is the one room in the house nobody opens, which is exactly why it is the one your visitors remember.

Start with the air, because a closed room smells closed and no spray fixes that. Wash the bedding instead of shaking it out: clean and fresh are not the same word after six months folded in a closet. Look under the bed, because that is where things go when a room is storage fifty weeks a year, and guests always look.

Then empty something for them. Two hangers and one drawer is the difference between a room somebody sleeps in and a room somebody can stay in.

One more, a few days early: run the tap and flush the guest bathroom. A bathroom nobody has used in months has a dry trap, and a dry trap smells like sewer.

If we have done right by your house, say so on Google. It takes about two minutes and it decides who finds us next month.

Nobody calls three cleaning companies anymore. They read what someone in their own neighborhood wrote, and then they call one. We have never run ads at your neighbors: since 2002 this has worked because people tell people. A review is the same thing, just where everyone can see it.

One tip if you write one: say the specific thing. "They got the baseboards" helps a stranger far more than "great service".

Nobody is asking you to rehome the dog.

We get the pet question a lot, and we want to be clear about where our opinion ends. Whether anything changes with pets during treatment is a question for the care team. They answer it all the time, and they answer it for the actual situation instead of in general.

What we can talk about is the cleaning.

The litter box is the easiest thing to move off the patient and onto whoever is helping. One errand, no discussion needed.

Fur does not live where you think. The open floor is the part that looks bad and the part that is easiest. What actually holds it is under the bed, the edge of the rug, the vent covers, the back of the couch cushions and the filter nobody has changed in a while.

And pet safe products matter more in a house like this, partly because they tend to carry less fragrance, which helps the person who cannot stand strong smells right now.

The dog stays. For a lot of people it is the best part of a hard month.

This one is for the husband, the daughter, the sister, the friend who drives to every appointment.

Nobody asks how you are doing. You are not the patient, so the assumption is that you are fine.

Meanwhile you are running the calendar, the insurance calls, the medication schedule, the meals, the house, and you are answering the same question from thirty people who all mean well.

The house is usually what gives first. It is the only thing on that list nobody is checking. So it slides, and then it turns into one more thing you feel bad about on top of everything else.

You cannot do all of it. Nobody can.

Pick the one thing you are going to hand to somebody else. Letting it go is not giving up, and nobody is grading you on the floors.

Cleaning for A Reason is a nonprofit that arranges free house cleaning for people going through cancer treatment. Here is how it actually works.

The application goes to the nonprofit, not to a cleaning company. Calling a cleaner first does not start anything.

You do not have to be the patient to apply. Family, a friend or a neighbor can start it on their behalf, which matters, because asking for help is often the exact thing the person cannot face doing.

The nonprofit handles the matching with a company near you. You do not have to find anyone, compare prices or negotiate.

And it costs the patient nothing. The cleaning company donates the work. No invoice at the end.

Everyone calls in November. By then the good days are gone, and the ones left are the ones nobody wanted.

Thanksgiving week is a single week, and every household in the Metro wants the same two days inside it. The people who get them are the ones already on the schedule.

So do the big one now. Deep clean in October, regular visit the week of. Both in the same week is how it turns rushed and expensive.

And open the guest room this month, not the night before someone lands. The room nobody has touched since spring always needs more than a vacuum.

One reset in October and the house holds all the way to New Year.
