Nothing says success quite like finding two bats waiting next to a one-way door when you return!
Each year, from August 15 through October 15, our Wildlife Resolutions team installs specialized one-way doors on buildings throughout Central New York. These doors allow bats to exit a structure naturally while preventing them from getting back inside.
As temperatures begin dropping below 40°F, we start returning to remove the doors and complete the final exclusion work.
Occasionally, we find a few familiar faces waiting for us!
Finding bats hanging out next to a one-way door is a great indicator that the exclusion is working. They've exited the building but haven't been able to return through their original entry point.
Of course, this doesn't happen on every job. Bats naturally use multiple roosting sites throughout the year, sometimes a dozen or more. Just because we don't find bats waiting doesn't mean the exclusion wasn't successful.
In fact, sometimes the evidence is much smaller. Our technicians carefully examine the one-way doors for tiny bat hairs left behind as the animals pass through. Those little details can tell us a lot about how the exclusion process is progressing.
Our goal isn't to remove bats from the environment. It's to keep them from living inside your home while allowing them to continue playing their important role in nature.
