I've shared this before but totally worth sharing again! This is stone is absolutely amazing! 🖤

Captain John Gray in memory of his parents, Elisabeth Wilkie and Thomas Gray, alongside Michael and John Swan.

The Occupations: The phrase "Wright in the Pleasants" means Thomas Gray was a wright (a traditional builder or carpenter) based in "The Pleasance," which is a historic street and area in Edinburgh.
• The Side Figures: The figures carved on the sides correspond to the parents mentioned.
The figure on the left with a cap represents his father, Thomas, while the figure on the right wearing a traditional bonnet represents his mother, Elisabeth.
• The Swan Children: Michael and John Swan, who sadly both passed away in 1746, are believed to have been Captain John Gray's nephews.

Location: Old Calton Burial Ground in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Caroline Cutter headstone, located in the Elm Street Cemetery in Milford, New Hampshire, is a famous, weathered grave marker featuring a bitter 150-word accusatory inscription. Caroline Hall Cutter died in 1838 at age 33, and her husband, Dr. Calvin Cutter, used her white headstone to publicly blame local Baptist church leaders—specifically naming Rev. D.D. Pratt and Deacon Albert Adams—for effectively "murdering" her through malicious gossip and excommunication without a hearing. Today, the historic and controversial stone can still be found by visitors, sitting directly behind a large memorial boulder dedicated to the Cutters' daughter, Carrie, who served as a notable Civil War nurse.

Caroline H., Wife of Calvin Cutter, M.D.Murdered by the Baptist Ministry and Baptist Churches As follows: Sep’t. 28, 1838; aged 33. She was accused of lying in church meeting by the Rev. D. D. Pratt and Deacon Albert Adams Was condemned by the church unheard.She was reduced to poverty by Deacon William Wallace When an exparte council was asked of the Milford Baptist Church, by the advice of their committee, George Raymond, Calvin Averill,and Andrew Hutchinson. They voted not to receive any communication on the subject. The Rev. Mark Carpenter said he thought as the good old Deacon said,“We’ve got Cutter down and it’s best to keep him down.” The intentional and malicious destruction of her character And happiness as above described destroyed her life. Her last words upon the subject were “Tell the Truth and The Iniquity will come out”

Back in 1685, a local man named Robert McWhae was caught in his own garden and summarily shot to death by a government troop led by Captain Thomas Douglas. This tragedy happened during the violent "Killing Times," a dark era of Scottish history when Covenanters were brutally hunted down simply for refusing to accept the King as the supreme head of the church. To honor his memory, an intense memento mori gravestone featuring a deeply carved skull and crossbones was placed at Kirkandrews Kirkyard around 1700. Because the elements eventually took a toll on the original stone, it was lovingly replaced in 1855 with the replica seen today, preserving the powerful message: "MEMENTO MORI HERE LYES ROBERT MCWHAE WHO WAS BARBAROUSLY SHOT TO DEATH BY CAPTAINE DOUGLASH IN THIS PAROCH FOR HIS ADHERENCE TO SCOTLANDS REFORMATION COVENANTS NATIONAL AND SOLEMN LEAGUE 1685".

The Meanest Man in Georgia

Moses Harshaw (1794-1858) is often described as the meanest man ever. The stories surrounding his life are so numerous and horrific that they seem almost unbelievable. Harshaw was one of the earliest white settlers in Habersham County. He migrated with his family from Burke County, North Carolina, in 1822 and settled in the Nacoochee Valley, now part of White County. Harshaw and his wife, Nancy English Harshaw, had seven children together.

Harshaw was notoriously cruel to those he enslaved. He would force the elderly and infirm to be pushed off the peak of Lynch Mountain when they were no longer economically useful to him. When he went into town, he often took a helper along, but they were not allowed to ride in the wagon. Instead, he would attach a rope from the back of the wagon to the helper's neck, forcing them to run to keep up with the horse.

A heartbreaking incident involving a young enslaved girl likely turned his wife, Nancy, against him for good. After discovering that Nancy had purchased a dress for the girl's burial, Harshaw demanded that the grave be dug up, and that the dress be removed from the body and returned to the store for credit.

Nancy, a long-suffering spouse, was among the first in line when Georgia made divorce legal in 1850. To commemorate her freedom, she planted a thorn bush near his grave.

That man needed more than a thorn bush 💪

The Infant of Prague is a world-famous 16th-century Roman Catholic statue of the Child Jesus, originally from Spain and now enshrined in Prague, Czech Republic.

• The Crown and Robes: These represent
Jesus's divine kingship and sovereignty over the entire universe.
• The Blessing Hand: His right hand is raised with two fingers pointing up, symbolizing the two natures of Christ (divine and human).
The thumb and next two fingers touch, representing the Holy Trinity.
• The Orb (Globus Cruciger): The cross-topped sphere in his left hand represents the entire world held in his care and under his spiritual domain.

My fellow cemetery workers and wanderers, have you ever felt like this before? The past two times I've been at work, I've been hit with an immense surge of sadness as soon as my feet touch the cemetery grounds. I feel the need to touch trees and headstones as I walk by, and the weird thing is, I'm almost surprised when it happens, as if it's not me doing it. I just touch the objects and then feel almost at peace. I probably sound crazy, but it's SO weird. Today, I visited three cemeteries, and the same thing happened each time.

This little building has a lot of character. The doorway too is rather short, I'm 5'4.

At. Josephs in Greenwich, New York, serves as the historic final resting place for the local Roman Catholic parish, which was established in 1870 to serve Irish Catholic immigrants who settled in upstate New York to work in the regional mills. On November 6, 1881, the parish’s first resident pastor, Father Thomas A. Field, officially purchased two parcels of land for $1,000 on the northern edge of Greenwich village to establish the cemetery, and while it officially opened that year, several headstones reflect earlier death dates from families relocating deceased loved ones from older municipal plots. The prominent red brick building featuring a stepped-gasp façade, a white peak cross, and a sealed front entrance functions as a historic 19th-century receiving vault, a specialized structure designed to temporarily store bodies during winter months when frozen ground conditions prevented manual grave digging.

🐾 The Iron Dog of Hollywood Cemetery 🐾

Standing watch over the grave of two-year-old Florence Bernardin Rees in Richmond, Virginia, is one of the most unusual cemetery monuments you’ll ever see a massive black cast-iron Newfoundland known as the “Iron Dog.”
Florence died of scarlet fever on February 2, 1862, at just two years old. Today, her grave is guarded by this remarkable statue, believed to have been made by the Baltimore company Bartlett-Hayward.
But the story behind the dog is where things get especially interesting…
According to local legend, Florence loved the Newfoundland statue that once stood outside a nearby shop. After her death, the statue was reportedly placed at her gravesite so that the beloved dog could continue to watch over her.
The area has since become known as “Black Dog Hill,” and the Iron Dog has become one of the most recognizable and talked-about monuments in Hollywood Cemetery.
More than 160 years later, the dog still stands silently beside Florence’s grave frozen in time, faithfully keeping watch. 🖤
