Leaves are coming down, so here's a quick fall yard reset that cuts down on the bugs and mice you'll fight this winter.

That gutter in the picture is full of wet leaves. That's a moisture trap right against the roofline, and bugs love it.

Your list for this weekend: Clean out the gutters. Rake leaves away from the foundation instead of piling them against the house. Stack firewood away from the house and up off the ground. Cut back branches that hang over the roof. They're a highway for rats and ants. Pull mulch a few inches back from the slab.

Want us to handle the outside of the house so you don't have to think about it? Our quarterly plan has an initial fee to get started, then it's from $35 a month starting the following month. Cancel anytime with no fees. Call (479) 783-1822.

This homeowner thought his house was sealed up tight. The attic told a different story.

Rodents were climbing the trees and shrubs growing against the house and running right onto the roof. From there they squeezed under the ridge cap and chewed through the plywood at the peak. Every one of those holes you see is a way into the attic.

This is why we always tell customers to trim trees, shrubs and branches back from the house. Branches touching your roof are basically a bridge for mice, rats and squirrels.

It's getting colder, and rodents are looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter. Don't let it be your attic. Call Extermco for a free inspection.

Rain on Halloween means the trick or treaters aren't the only ones looking to come inside.

When the ground floods, ant colonies pack up and head for higher, drier ground. A lot of times that's the edge of your slab, then your kitchen.

What helps: Trim back bushes and mulch that touch the siding. Ants use them as a bridge. Wipe up crumbs and sugary spills, especially after the candy comes in. Don't spray store bought bug spray on the trail. It can split the colony and give you more nests.

Our quarterly service treats the full outside of the house, including the slab edges and brick ledges ants travel on. Call (479) 783-1822 to get started.

Happy Halloween, y'all.

We took over this account from another pest company and found termite treatment drill holes that had been poorly patched. We couldn't just leave them like that, so we ground them down and cleaned them up as smooth and flush as we could.

Are they perfect? No. Concrete patches never fully disappear. But it looks a lot better than it did.

Thinking about switching pest companies? Call Extermco for a free inspection.

German roaches. Myth vs Fact.

Myth: Roaches only show up in dirty houses. Fact: German roaches ride in. Grocery bags, moving boxes, used appliances, a backpack. Clean houses get them too.

Myth: A bug bomb will take care of it. Fact: Foggers mostly push roaches deeper into the walls and cabinets where the spray can't reach.

Myth: I only saw one, so it's just one. Fact: German roaches hide during the day. If you see one out in daylight, there are usually a lot more you're not seeing.

German roaches are one of the few pests that live and breed inside, so they need their own treatment aimed right where they hide. If you've seen one, call us at (479) 783-1822 or text a picture to (479) 446-6566.

Building a new home? The best termite protection it will ever get happens before the concrete is poured. Once the slab goes down, the soil under it is locked away for good.

A pretreat covers the soil under the house, the garage, the porch and the patio, then a barrier goes in along the outside of the foundation. Liquid or bait, we will help you pick what fits the lot.

Building in Springdale, Rogers or Bentonville? Ask your builder about the pretreat now and keep the paperwork. Questions? Call us at (479) 783-1822.

The easiest time to protect a house from termites is before the concrete is poured.

On new construction we treat the soil before the slab goes down, so the house starts out with a treated barrier underneath it. Once that slab is poured, getting under it means drilling.

Building in the River Valley or NWA? Get the pretreat on your schedule before the pour. Builders, send us your plans and we'll get you a bid.

Already in your house? We protect existing homes too, with liquid or bait systems, and our termite warranty is renewable every year. Every job starts with an inspection, and pricing comes after we've seen the house.

Hear scratching overhead after you go to bed? This time of year that's usually mice or rats moving in for the winter.

They don't need much room. A mouse fits through a gap about the size of a dime. The usual way in is where a pipe or line comes through the wall, like the one in this picture. Most people stuff that with foam. Rodents chew right through foam.

We close those gaps with metal. This one got a stainless steel plate screwed to the block so nothing is chewing through it.

Things to check this weekend: Gaps around pipes, AC lines, and dryer vents. Garage door seals that don't touch the slab. Branches hanging over the roof.

If you're already hearing them, call us at (479) 783-1822. We'll find where they're getting in and close it up.
