Does your house seem to attract large numbers of lady beetles? If so, it may be the multicolored Asian lady beetle (MALB).

Here are some facts about MALBs:

๐Ÿž The MALB is a native Asian species. This insect was first introduced into the U.S. in the early 1900s and after numerous subsequent releases, became permanently established across the country.

๐Ÿž MALB adults differ from other lady beetle species by a pair of white, oval markings behind the head that form a black M-shaped pattern.

๐Ÿž Large hidden aggregations may hibernate in dark, secluded areas inside homes, such as attics and basements. They also may invade living areas of the home and on warm sunny days may be found flying toward windows.

๐Ÿž When disturbed, MALB exudes a foul smelling yellow-orange liquid that can permanently stain walls, carpeting, drapes, and furniture. Do not swat or crush the MALB to reduce the likelihood of this defensive behavior.

๐Ÿž The best approach to managing an MALB problem is to prevent them from entering your home or building by sealing cracks and other points of entry before they begin to congregate in late summer and fall.

๐Ÿž If a swarm of MALBs has gained entrance into your dwelling, a vacuum cleaner may be used to collect the beetles. Be sure to remove the vacuum cleaner bag and dispose of it outside once you have finished collecting the beetles to prevent them from escaping.

As the weather cools, we are seeing lots of monarch butterflies in Arkansas!

These beauties are currently making their great annual migration to their overwintering locations; the eastern North American monarchs we are seeing are headed to Mexico!

Here are a few things you may not have known about monarch butterflies:

๐Ÿฆ‹ Many species of butterfly can spend their entire lifecycles in one location, but the monarch cannot handle the cold temperatures found in the northern states.

๐Ÿฆ‹ Eastern North American monarchs (the ones we are seeing here in Arkansas right now) spend October to late March in the mountains of Mexico.

๐Ÿฆ‹ You can find colonies of monarchs, sometimes tens of thousands in one tree! They like to cluster together so they can stay warm.

๐Ÿฆ‹ Eastern North American monarchs use several flyways to travel South, but those flyways merge into a single path in Central Texas.

๐Ÿฆ‹ Monarch butterflies only travel during the day and roost at night.

Seeing these chubby spiders spinning gorgeous webs around your house? ๐Ÿ‘€

Meet: The Spotted Orb Weaver ๐Ÿ•ท

Here are a few things you may not know about these fellows:

๐Ÿ•ธ The orb weaver is one of the most common garden spiders in the northern hemisphere.

๐Ÿ•ธ The intricate webs you see this time of year are most often spun by females.

๐Ÿ•ธ The spotted orb weaver spiders are mostly nocturnal, but in the fall they have so much work to do they are at it day and night.

๐Ÿ•ธ The females are the web weavers and they have a plump abdomen that is variously spotted with rusty-red or yellow-orange dots,

๐Ÿ•ธ Their legs are alternately banded in black and yellowish markings.

๐Ÿ•ธ The orb spider spins her web anew every evening and, during the following day eats the old web, rests about an hour and then spins another web.
