Wink News conducted an informative interview with our technician, Darius Johnson! The video isn’t the best quality because it was filmed directly from the broadcast but the information contained within it is very useful. Please take a moment to watch as this applies to everyone in our service area.

Once again we want to stress the importance of proper irrigation. Many of our seasonal customers set the irrigation and leave for the summer hoping we will get rain. Sometimes we do and sometimes we don't. (Rain sensors are a big help in this case!) That's the reality of weather here in SW Florida. August was very wet while September was brutally hot and dry. Proper irrigation is vital to maintaining a lush green lawn. Please take time this week to run through your irrigation system to ensure all heads are operating properly and you are getting complete coverage. During dry periods you need to run the zones longer to saturate the root system. 15 minutes on rotating head zones will not do the job - it will only get the blades wet and not provide enough water to hydrate the lawn. If you are unsure what days you are permitted to irrigate, this link will provide the information you need. https://www.leegov.com/utilities/customer-resource-center/water-restrictions

St. Augustine Grass is susceptible to a type of fungus called brown patch. Brown patch fungus causes large brown patches in the lawn. Symptoms begin as 6-12 inch diameter off color patches that turn yellow, then reddish-brown, then brown to straw-colored. These patches may merge and expand several feet in diameter. Cool wet conditions are the perfect breeding ground for this type of disease (cool meaning below 80 degrees as we do live in Florida!). Irrigation is a KEY component in controlling this disease and should be managed according to the current weather conditions. Irrigation is not a “set it and forget it” event. It takes teamwork to keep your lawn looking its best!

Tuttle mealybug is a piercing-sucking
insect pest first documented in Florida in 1975 in
Pompano Beach, but was rarely a problem until the early
2000s. More recently, these insect pests have become
commonly reported damaging pests of zoysiagrass
lawns. In 2016, Tuttle mealybug was found throughout
FL, from Naples to Jacksonville and west near Pensacola.
