She’s on the floor with the baby, and the list has finally gone quiet.

The clean house is real, and it matters. What changes your week is the afternoon where the laundry and the bathrooms and the floors aren’t sitting in the back of your mind while you’re trying to be present somewhere else.

Most weeks it feels like there’s no room for that. The list is long, the days are full, and somewhere we all picked up the idea that a good mom is supposed to carry every piece of it on her own. You weren’t built to carry it alone, and you don’t have to.

The girls’ room, the morning of cleaning day. Every doll out, the floor somewhere under there, a craft situation in the corner.
Everyone calls this part cleaning for the cleaners. It is not cleaning. You are moving the dolls off the floor so the floor can get cleaned, picking up so the real work has room to happen. That part, the cleaning itself, is ours.
So pick up what you want to and leave the rest. We have seen the real version of every kind of house on the Eastern Shore, and we are not keeping score.
You come home to clean floors and a room that finally resets. The crafts survive. That happy meal toy, we make no promises.

A customer told me she’d started thinking her expectations were too high. Her old cleaning service left a dried Cheerio sitting on the kitchen counter, and she wondered if she was being picky for even noticing.

You’re not crazy, and you’re not picky. The Cheerio should have come off the counter.
