Bubbles under your PPF aren't always the installer's fault — but sometimes they are. Here's how to tell the difference.

Moisture bubbles are the most common ones people panic over. PPF is installed wet, and that moisture needs time to escape through the film. Depending on your climate, this can take days to a few weeks. These disappear on their own and are not a defect.

Contamination bubbles are a different story. If the surface wasn't properly decontaminated before install — iron particles, wax residue, or fine dust — the film won't bond flat to the paint. Those contaminants sit between the adhesive and the panel, creating permanent bubbles that won't go away. This one is on the installer's prep process.

Application error bubbles happen when the film is stretched too aggressively or adhesive activator is applied unevenly. Stretched film has memory — it wants to return to its original shape, and when it does, it lifts in certain areas. You'll usually notice these along curved panels.

Heat distortion can cause temporary lifting on dark-colored cars. This isn't a defect — it's the adhesive reacting to extreme temperature and usually settles once the car cools.

Bubbles appearing weeks after install, on flat panels, or growing in size are the ones to worry about. Those point to poor prep, failing adhesive, or low-quality film.
