A townhouse dryer vent cleaning with a more complex setup than you might expect.

The dryer was located on the second floor, with the exhaust line running up another two floors and exiting through the roof. Adding to the challenge, three bathroom exhaust lines and the dryer exhaust were all capped through the same roof gooseneck.

Longer, multi-level dryer vents can be more difficult to access and maintain, making proper inspection and cleaning especially important. Restrictions anywhere along the run can affect airflow and dryer performance.

A dryer needs proper airflow to remove moisture efficiently. When insulation, lint, or other debris gets into the exterior dryer exhaust vent, it can restrict that airflow and make the dryer work harder and take longer to dry clothes.

In this case, insulation was found blocking the outdoor exhaust opening. A restriction like this can contribute to longer drying times, reduced dryer performance, overheating, and increased fire risk from accumulated lint.

The exterior termination should be inspected along with the entire dryer vent path, especially when a dryer is taking longer than usual to dry clothes.
