To our amazing customers, loyal friends, and supportive family — thank you for calling, referring, sharing our posts, waving at our van around town, and keeping Helps Drain & Septic Service flowing strong since day one.

Running a small business isn’t always glamorous (let’s be honest 😂), but because of YOU, we’ve been able to build something we’re truly proud of for the past 20 years.

Brrrr....🥶
We have had some freezing temps lately.

Plumbing systems can freeze when temps take a sudden nosedive past the freezing mark, and when water freezes and expands within a pipe, the pipe can burst 💦 or even freeze up causing blockage.

Here are some tips to protect your plumbing during extreme cold:

Turn one faucet to a slow drip
Insulate exposed pipes
Seal off drafts
Drain outdoor faucets
Maintain a stable indoor temperature
Open cabinet doors
Locate your emergency shut-off valves

PLEASE NOTE - This is an email we received from IOWA DNR. We are posting this to help our customers understand why we cannot do septic tank inspections in the winter months.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SEPTIC TANK INSPECTIONS

Time of Transfer inspections rely on probing and visual observation to determine the condition and performance of the soil absorption area, as required by Chapter 69. Frozen ground and snow cover directly interfere with these required inspection steps.

Probing is a required procedure used to assess soil conditions by listening to sound, feeling resistance, and observing and smelling what is released from the soil.

When the ground is frozen or frost-affected, probes cannot pe*****te to an adequate depth, soil feel cannot be accurately assessed, and indicators such as saturation, wastewater presence, or odor cannot be reliably identified. In these conditions, absorption fields cannot be properly probed as required by rule.

Snow cover further limits inspection by preventing visual evaluation of the absorption area. Ponding, surfacing effluent, soil disturbance, and other surface indicators cannot be observed when the field is covered.

Because absorption fields shall be probed and their condition shall be noted on the inspection report, inspections performed during frozen or snow-covered conditions cannot meet inspection standards.

When winter conditions prevail, the solution is to use a binding agreement to delay the inspection until the frost is out of the ground and the site is fully visible. This ensures the inspection is complete, defensible, and compliant with Iowa requirements.

Any questions concerning this Chapter 69 rule and requirement, contact Cory Frank (IDNR) at [email protected] or call 515-689-7941
