Todd Beamer was 32 years old when he learned his plane had become a weapon. On the morning of September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93 was hijacked. Through phone calls to family and ground operators, the passengers discovered the unbearable truth: other aircraft had already struck the World Trade Center. Their flight was headed toward Washington.

Beamer and a handful of others made a choice that few people are ever forced to face. They could accept what was happening, or they could act. They chose to fight.

Before leading the charge toward the cockpit, Beamer spoke into an Airfone. His words would echo through history: "Let's roll." He and the other passengers rushed forward, knowing almost certainly they would not survive. The aircraft descended rapidly as the struggle unfolded at 35,000 feet.

At 10:03 a.m., Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Everyone on board perished. But the plane never reached its target. The world remembers the aircraft. Too few remember the ordinary men and women who chose courage over despair, who decided in their final moments that their lives might save countless others. Todd Beamer's voice carries their legacy.
