Most buildings have one mat inside the front door and figure they're covered.

Here's the problem: it takes several steps for a shoe to let go of what it's carrying. One 3x5 mat gets you about two of them. The rest ends up on your floor, in your grout, and eventually in your maintenance budget.

A working entrance has three layers — swipe through to see what they are.

First frost usually shows up mid-October around here. So you've got roughly five weeks to get this right before it actually matters.

This came in from a facility service coordinator and I haven't stopped thinking about it:

"The mats they provide are part of our safety program. I admire the guys moving the carts full of mats in all kinds of weather to keep us safe and our facilities clean."

That's the whole job. Somebody's out in February sleet moving a cart so nobody goes down in March.

Most people assume a first aid cabinet is a first aid cabinet. It isn't.

OSHA requires supplies to be readily available and adequate for the specific hazards of your workplace — so a school kitchen, a shop class, and a front office shouldn't have identical cabinets.

Then there's the part almost everyone forgets: things expire.

- Sterile pads and dressings
- Antiseptic wipes and ointments
- AED electrode pads
- AED batteries

I've opened cabinets that were completely full AND completely useless. "Stocked" doesn't mean "usable".

You thought we just did commercial floor mats. 🥁

That's Patrick "PattyCake" Morris of Richrath Project REO, and we had the pleasure of supplying the mat under that kit.

And yes, a drum rug has an actual job. It keeps the kit from walking across the stage mid-song, and it takes a beating every night on a different floor. That's not far off what we ask of a mat at a loading dock, except the lighting is considerably better.

We can do it all: entrance mats, scraper mats, anti-fatigue mats, and the thing your drummer stands on. Barn, shop floor, front entrance, or stage — if you can dream it, we can probably mat it.

"Are anti-fatigue mats required by law?"

I get this question all the time, so let me give you the real answer instead of the sales answer.

No. There's no OSHA rule that says you must have anti-fatigue mats.

But OSHA's General Duty Clause requires employers to provide a workplace free from recognized hazards likely to cause serious harm. And prolonged standing on hard surfaces is a recognized hazard.

So the mats aren't mandated... but the outcome is.

What eight hours on concrete actually does:
▪️Restricts blood flow in the legs and feet
▪️Loads the lower back and knees
▪️Compounds across the shift — people are worn out before they clock off

An anti-fatigue mat works by being slightly unstable. It keeps the leg muscles making small constant adjustments, which keeps circulation moving.

If your people stand all day, this is one of the easiest ergonomics upgrades you'll find. I'd rather tell you that straight than dress it up as a compliance requirement it isn't.

Meet John Sudano, our new Sales & Business Development Manager.

John's got more than 15 years in sales and business development, most recently in public safety and manufacturing — which means he already speaks the language of the people we serve. He's been on the other side of these conversations.

Born and raised in Staten Island, moved to Wisconsin in 2009, and he's been here 17 years now. He loves a Wisconsin summer, and is apparently a real fair connoisseur.

I asked him what he wants customers to feel working with him. He said: valued, supported, and confident he'll follow through on what he said he'd do.

That's the job. That's the whole job.

One more thing — his middle name is Skippy. He says it's a long story.

I did a school supply run for Family Promise of Washington County this week, and to be honest, I'd forgotten how fast that cart fills up! 🛒🖍️📚

Binders, folders, glue sticks, crayons, markers... Any one of them is a couple of dollars. All of them at once is a number that makes you wince if the month is already tight.

Family Promise is running their Back-to-School Fair next week:

▪️Hartford on Wednesday the 26th at 255 W. Lincoln Ave.
▪️West Bend on Thursday the 27th at 925 N. Silverbrook Dr.
⏰Both 3:00 to 6:00 PM

Registration is open now, and registering ahead is what tells them how many backpacks to pack. 🎒

Washington County is part of our service area. We're in school buildings out there every week, so this one hits close to home.

Here's a Wisconsin quirk that works in your favor if you run a school building: state law says public schools can't start fall classes until after September 1.

Which means right now you've got about four weeks of empty hallways. That's the window.

Here's what I'd check before the doors open:

1. WALK YOUR ENTRANCES — Are the mats still trapping dirt, or just sitting there?
2. OPEN THE FIRST AID CABINET — Check the expiration dates. Yes, all of them.
3. COUNT YOUR PAPER AND SOAP — What lasted all summer won't last a week in September.
4. SERVICE THE AEDs — Pads and batteries that are expired can't save lives.

Honestly, the one that gets missed most is the first aid cabinet. Everybody assumes it's fine because it's full, but full doesn't mean unexpired.
