Frozen pipes don’t always stay frozen... and that’s when the real trouble can begin!

When water freezes inside a pipe, it expands and can cause the pipe to crack or burst. Once it thaws, that water can quickly spread into walls, floors, and ceilings.

A few tips for the colder weather months ahead:
• Keep your thermostat at 55°F or higher when away from home.
• Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing on exterior walls.
• Insulate pipes in unheated areas.
• During extreme cold, consider allowing vulnerable faucets to drip slowly.
• Never use an open flame to thaw frozen pipes.

If you discover a burst pipe, shut off the water supply if it’s safe to do so and call for professional help.
