Lightning + Rainbow in the Same Storm

In March 2026, scientists using airborne electromagnetic surveys revealed a massive hidden freshwater system extending deep beneath Utah's Great Salt Lake — reaching depths of up to 4 kilometres underground.

The discovery shocked researchers because the Great Salt Lake is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the Western Hemisphere, with salinity levels far exceeding ocean water. Yet directly beneath it lies an enormous volume of fresh water that has been sitting there undetected.

The freshwater was found to extend much further beneath the lake than anyone had previously estimated. The surveys mapped subsurface conductivity patterns from aircraft, revealing the boundaries between salt water and fresh water hidden in the rock formations below.

The implications are significant for a region experiencing severe drought. Utah's Great Salt Lake has been shrinking dramatically in recent years, exposing toxic dust on its lakebed that threatens the health of millions of people in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Understanding the freshwater systems connected to and beneath the lake could reshape water management strategies for the entire region.

A lake famous for being too salty was hiding an ocean of fresh water underneath it all along.

FIRE RING ABOVE THE HORIZON

That glowing arc isn’t a “second Sun” ... it’s a thin band of light carved into the cloud layer, sitting perfectly over the real sunset like a halo.

This can happen when sunlight hits a very flat sheet of ice crystals high in the sky. Those crystals bend and concentrate the light into a partial ring/arc, and the warmer the sunset gets, the more that arc turns copper-gold.

The “beaded” look along the arc is usually uneven crystal alignment + patchy thin cloud, so the bright band breaks into little hot spots instead of one smooth line.
