Pulling the holiday decorations out of the attic this month? Check the boxes for silverfish before you bring them downstairs.

Silverfish love cardboard, paper, fabric, and glue, and Georgia attics give them everything at once. Heat, humidity, and years of undisturbed storage.

Once the furnace kicks on, they follow the warmth into bathrooms, closets, and bookshelves.

They will not bite, but they chew through photos, wrapping paper, and stored clothes, and they are hard to get rid of once they settle in.

Store keepsakes in sealed plastic bins, run a dehumidifier in damp areas, and seal the gaps they travel through.

If you run a restaurant, warehouse, or property in Utah, October is when the mouse problem starts, not December.

Rodents move into commercial buildings the moment nights turn cold, and loading docks, dumpster areas, and utility penetrations are the open doors.

One sighting in a dining room or a note on a health inspection costs more than a year of prevention.

The right program is built around your operation. Scheduled exterior barriers, monitored bait stations, exclusion work, and documentation ready for auditors and inspectors.

Service is discreet, with flexible scheduling and unmarked vehicles, so customers and tenants never notice.

Small cone shaped holes all over your lawn, and a smell near the deck at night? You have a skunk, and October is when they settle in.

Skunks dig for grubs in the fall while the soil is soft, then look for a dry place to spend the winter. Under decks, sheds, porches, and crawlspaces are their favorites.

The spray is the obvious problem. The quieter one is rabies. Skunks are one of Georgia's main rabies carriers, and this year's positive cases across Gwinnett are a reminder.

Do not try to trap or block one yourself. A cornered skunk sprays, and a sealed den can trap an animal inside, where it dies under the floor.

Professional removal gets the animal out humanely, then closes the entry points so nothing else moves in.

Sluggish flies showing up at your windows on sunny October days? Those are cluster flies, and they are not coming from your trash.

Cluster flies spend the summer outdoors, where their larvae develop on earthworms in lawns and fields. In early fall they gather on warm, sunny walls and work their way into attics, wall voids, and ceiling spaces to overwinter.

Utah State University Extension says the key identifiers are a dull grayish brown color, yellow hairs on the thorax, and slow, clumsy movement. They do not bite and do not breed indoors.

Every warm spell through winter wakes a few up, which is why they keep appearing at windows in January.

The fix is exclusion, and the window is now. Caulk cracks around windows, siding, soffits, and vents. Repair screens. Seal attic gaps.

Once they are inside, a vacuum is the easiest tool. They are too slow to bother swatting.

If your home gets them every year, an exterior treatment on the sunny sides in early fall breaks the cycle.

The first cold snap in Georgia flips a switch for rats and mice. Scouting ends, and moving in begins.

October is the busiest month of the year for rodent calls, and most of them start the same way. Scratching in a wall after dark, droppings in a pantry corner, or a chewed bag of dog food in the garage.

A mouse needs a gap the width of a pencil. A rat needs about the size of a quarter. Pipe penetrations, garage door corners, foundation vents, and gaps along the roofline are the usual routes.

Traps catch the ones already inside. Exclusion keeps the rest out. Skip the second half and you will be setting traps all winter.

October is when raccoons pick out a Georgia attic to spend the winter, and once they are in, they do not leave on their own.

They tear through soffits and roof vents, shred insulation for bedding, and leave droppings that can carry roundworm.

The sounds are the giveaway. Heavy thumping and scratching after dark, unlike the daytime chatter of squirrels.

Given this year's string of rabies positive raccoons across Gwinnett, this is not a DIY job. Georgia requires licensed removal for good reason.

The right approach removes the animal humanely, cleans up the contamination, and seals the entry point so the next one cannot follow.

Fall travel season is when bed bugs quietly move into Utah homes.

Weekend trips, college kids coming home, holiday guests, and that great deal on a used couch. Every one of them is a ride.

Bed bugs do not care how clean your house is. They only care about a place to hide near where you sleep.

Check mattress seams and headboards for small dark spots, shed skins, and live bugs. Bites in a line or cluster are another clue.

Catch them early and treatment is fast. Wait a few months and you are dealing with every room.

Those orange ladybugs that swarm your windows every fall are not the friendly garden kind.

They are Asian lady beetles, and starting in late October they pile onto sunny walls by the thousands on warm afternoons, then squeeze inside to overwinter.

Unlike native ladybugs, they bite, they stain walls and fabric with a yellow fluid, and they smell awful when crushed.

The fix is the same one that blocks stink bugs and kudzu bugs, and the deadline is the same. Seal before the swarms start.

UGA Extension recommends closing every gap an eighth of an inch or wider around windows, doors, siding, soffits, and vents.

Light colored homes and south or west facing walls get the heaviest pressure.

Once they are inside, vacuum them up. Do not crush them unless you like the smell.

A perimeter treatment in the next few weeks makes the biggest difference.

The fall pest forecast for Utah is out, and it says summer is not clocking out yet.

The National Pest Management Association's Fall and Winter Bug Barometer predicts that unseasonably warm temperatures and dry conditions across the Intermountain West could extend ant and stinging insect activity well past when it usually winds down.

Translation for Utah homeowners. Do not assume the first cool night ends wasp season. Yellowjackets stay aggressive as long as afternoons stay warm.

Ants will keep pushing into kitchens too, since a dry fall sends them hunting for water indoors.

The forecast also notes that any heavy rain events push scorpions and spiders indoors looking for drier ground.

The move is to keep your guard up through October. Keep trash lidded, keep food sealed, and keep exterior entry points closed.

If you have been waiting for the weather to solve the problem, this year it probably will not.

Spraying spiders around your Dacula home this fall? Here is why it keeps not working.

Spider sprays kill the spiders they touch and change almost nothing else. Spiders are in your home for one reason, the insects they eat.

Kill ten today and ten more move into the same food supply next week.

Professional spider control works differently. It removes webs and egg sacs from the eaves down, treats the sheltered spots where spiders rest, and reduces the insect population that draws them in.

Some of that you can do yourself. Some of it you cannot.

Here is where the line is, and when it is worth calling a pro.

Spider sprays rarely fix the real problem. See how DIY compares to professional spider control in Dacula and what actually keeps them out of your home.
