The Ultimate Homemade Beef & Cheddar
Craving that classic, melty fast-food icon? This DIY version hits the spot with toasted savory buns, succulent roast beef, and a liquid gold cheese sauce that’s pure comfort.
The Essentials:
4 aromatic onion buns
1 lb (450 g) premium thin deli roast beef
1 cup (240 ml) silky cheddar cheese sauce
1/2 cup (120 ml) rich beef broth or au jus
2 tablespoons (30 g) salted butter
1/4 teaspoon (1 g) cracked black pepper
The Playbook:
Fire up a large skillet over medium-high heat and swirl in the butter until it's shimmering and melted.
Nestle those onion buns face down; toast for 2 minutes until they reach a perfect, crispy golden brown.
Transfer the buns to a plate and immediately splash the beef broth into that same seasoned skillet.
Drop the heat to medium and submerge the deli roast beef into the simmering, savory liquid.
Season with black pepper and let the meat soak up the juices for 3 minutes until steaming hot.
Whisk your cheddar sauce in a small pan over low heat for 1 minute until it's velvety and bubbling.
Grab your tongs to hoist the beef from the broth, giving it a quick shake to shed the excess liquid.
Pile the juicy roast beef generously onto your buns and finish with a heavy drizzle of liquid gold.
