π ESN LAGOS BRANCH: A REWARDING AND IMPACTFUL MEETING
It was a pleasure joining colleagues at the Entomological Society of Nigeria (ESN), Lagos Branch meeting on 8th October 2026, graciously hosted by the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), Lagos.
The meeting, under the leadership of our Branch Chairman, Dr Oluwakemi Kafayat Ojelara, was both engaging and enriching. It was particularly delightful to have our highly respected Mama, Professor Winifred Makanjuola, a retired Professor and former Chairman of ESN Lagos Branch, in attendance.
π± CATCH THEM YOUNG!
One major takeaway was the need to identify, encourage, and mentor promising young entomologists. Many of us were introduced to ESN as undergraduates or young postgraduate students. We must continue this tradition by supporting young researchers through mentorship, conference sponsorship, transportation, accommodation, and opportunities to present their research.
β οΈ FOOD SAFETY IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY!
An insightful presentation by Dr Bolajoko Adewoye, titled βTowards Safer Pesticide Use in Nigeria: Challenges, Solutions and Shared Responsibilities,β highlighted the dangers of pesticide misuse.
Ensuring food safety should not be left to NAFDAC and other regulatory agencies alone. There is an urgent need for sustained public awareness campaigns through radio, television, social media, and community outreach, particularly on the dangers of using banned or unapproved pesticides on fish, kola nuts, cowpeas (beans), and other food products.
π APPRECIATION
My sincere appreciation goes to Professor Lateef Sanni, Executive Director of NSPRI, and Engr. Dr Shuaeeb Oyewole, Zonal Coordinator, NSPRI Lagos, for the Institute's warm hospitality and support.
Special appreciation to our Branch Chairman, the organisers, and all colleagues who contributed to making the meeting memorable.
πΏ The future of entomology depends on the young scientists we nurture today, while the health of our nation depends on the food safety practices we promote.
π Together, we can make a difference!
