OTD is born out of 3 peoples’ mutual love for all things automotive - not to

mention our borderline obsession with things being done right. All of us have been in and around the car and detailing industry for a considerable amount of time. Between us we have over 30 years’ experience working on making cars look their best, and we have all been enthusiasts for a lifetime. Having all experienced a wide range of customer service, from both sides of the transaction, we believe we know how to offer our customers the best experience possible and always strive to do so. This business is not just a job to us, but a manifestation of all our individual desires to enjoy our work and working environment by doing what we love; being able to share the enjoyment we get from spending time in and on our cars with our customers, and looking after your pride and and joy the same way we look after our own. The biggest reward for us is seeing your reaction to the results on collection day. We would like to create a space at OTD where everyone can come to chat, learn and share a mutual passion; a place where we can offer a wide range of services, all completed to the highest standards, and create a strong lasting relationship with all our customers. We have created a fully equipped studio with dedicated detailing bays and a large clean room for Paint Protection Film installation, and even our own on-site "spotless water" - which is used throughout the process to ensure no watermarks and the best possible finish. We are always happy to receive visitors and chat about anything car related! If you require a long chat/quotation for work, we respectfully ask you to contact us first and arrange a suitable time to ensure the right person is available to give you their full and undivided attention for as long as required. Perfection should never be rushed.

One phrase you often hear in the detailing industry is...

"We're fully insured."

It sounds reassuring.

But what does it actually mean?

That question came up last werk when a customer contacted us for a quotation and asked if they could see proof of our insurance before booking.

"No problems" 🙏🏾

A few minutes later we'd emailed it across.

The following day they booked in and thanked us.

They'd contacted a couple of other companies and discovered the insurance in place differed from what they had expected.

This post isn't about criticising anyone.

Public liability insurance is an important policy for many businesses. However, not all insurance policies provide the same level of protection, and the phrase "fully insured" can mean very different things depending on the cover that's actually in place. It's often misunderstood but Public Liability Insurance does not cover a detailer for damage.

If you're handing over the keys to your pride and joy, it's perfectly reasonable to ask a few simple questions:

✔️ What insurance do you have?

✔️ Does it cover customers' vehicles while they're being worked on?

✔️ Can you provide proof if requested?

Most people aren't insurance experts, and nor should they have to be. But taking two minutes to ask those questions could save a lot of stress if the unexpected ever happened.

Our insurance costs us around £4,500 per year.

It's one of the least exciting (and in some ways most annoying) bills we pay - but it's also one of the most important. We see it as part of running a professional business and giving our customers confidence when they hand us the keys to their cars sometimes worth as much as a house.

Whether you choose On Track Detailing or another company, I'd always encourage you to ask about their insurance. Any reputable business should be happy to explain what cover they have and provide evidence if requested.

Hopefully it's information you'll never need.

But if you ever do, you'll be glad you asked.

"Must be nice working on super cars all day."

We hear that quite a lot.

The truth is most of our work isn't Ferraris, Lamborghinis or brand new supercars.

It's cars like this Audi A1.

Daily drivers

School run cars

Cars that are used properly, but owned by people who genuinely care about them.

And honestly, we love working on them just as much as any "high end" car.

This A1 had picked up plenty of contamination over the years, so before any polishing started it went through a full decontamination process to remove all the embedded fallout from the paint.

From there we carried out a two-stage paint correction, bringing the gloss back and removing the vast majority of the swirl marks that had slowly built up over time.

Once corrected, we protected the paint with APEX NANO™ ceramic coating, making it easier to keep clean and helping it stay looking its best.

We also applied PPF to the headlights, mirrors and A-pillars. They're some of the first areas to suffer from stone chips, swirl marks and those annoying little scratches and scuffs you seem to collect just from everyday use. The B Pillars especially are so soft and delicate, polishing them is a waste of time. PPF stops all the swirls.

While it was with us, the engine bay received a thorough clean, and the interior was given a full valet to finish everything off.

The best cars to work on aren't necessarily the most expensive ones.

They're the ones where the owner genuinely cares and sees the value.

That being said even a car like this can cost upwards of £30,000 new - gone are the days of a cheap small car!

Whether it's an Audi A1 or an Audi R8, seeing someone smile when they collect a car they've worked hard for is exactly the same.

Some cars just make sense to protect.

This Tesla Model Y is one of them.

Flat black paint looks fantastic when it's clean, but it doesn't take much for it to lose that fresh look.

A few motorway miles and the front end starts collecting stone chips.

A few washes and the swirl marks begin to creep in.

That's exactly why the owner booked it in.

We've looked after quite a few of his cars over the years, including fully PPFing his Alfa Romeo Giulia, so he already knew what paint protection film could save him from.

This time we covered the full front end with 12-year ultra clear, self healing hydrophobic PPF.

Every edge was wrapped where possible, and rather than leaving the usual cut around the Tesla badge, we removed it completely and refitted it afterwards.

It's a small detail, but those little touches make a big difference to the finished result.

While it was with us, we also painted the brake calipers red, which really lifts the look against the black paint.

One thing I thought about while working on this car was how often people ask us for a discount.

The reality is, our pricing is our pricing. We have bundle packages where applicable but we can't knock off £100 just because you asked. I'd be homeless!

But loyalty is different.

This customer has trusted us with multiple cars over the years, is a pleasure to deal with, recommends us to others, and is simply a joy to have around.

People like that are the reason small businesses survive.

So yes, we looked after him on the price.

Not because he asked. But because we wanted to.

Good customers are just as valuable as good workmanship, and we think it's important to show that appreciation from time to time

There's something about the Mazda MX-5 RF that just makes sense.

Lightweight, rear-wheel drive, manual gearbox, and a clever folding hardtop. You don't need 500bhp to put a smile on your face.

This one arrived looking a little sorry for itself though.

The pearlescent white paint had lost all of its sparkle, hidden under layers of dirt and contamination. Judging by the amount of debris and fallout on the car, I'd guess it had spent a long time parked outside, probably under a tree.

The iron contamination was particularly bad. Before we could even think about polishing, the paint needed a thorough decontamination and clay treatment to get it back to a clean surface. All the shuts and trims were filthy. Usually, it takes us about 2 hours to prep a car for a detail. This one took 3 😬.

Only then could we see the true condition of the paintwork. Standard condition for a car that never had a detail. A bit dull, hazy and the usual swirls. Nothing we couldn't fix.

A full two-stage correction followed, with a cutting stage to remove the defects and a refinement stage to maximise the gloss. Around 90% of the swirl marks and imperfections were removed, owing to the slightly softer than average paint. This completely changing the appearance of the car.

The pearlescent finish was the biggest winner. Once clean and corrected, it had so much more depth and brightness than when it arrived.

To help make everything it easier to maintain, we finished it with .co ceramic coating, giving the paint durable protection.

The client was over the moon, leaving us a 5 Star Google review which is always welcome 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

Sometimes a well-loved little roadster deserves just as much attention as any supercar

"It's not that bad."

It's funny how often we hear that. If I had a £1 every time we are told that, I'd probably have enough for a meal deal (so expensive these days right??)

Only a few days ago we had that BMW M4 in where the owner said exactly the same thing...

This Mercedes C-Class was a little different.

The owner booked in for a single-stage correction because they felt the paintwork was already in good shape. It was a new-ish purchase to them, a used car with reasonably low mileage.

From a few metres away, it looked perfectly respectable.

Then the sun hit it. 😬

Heavy swirl marks across almost every panel.

Wash marring. Plus rotary holograms from poor previous polishing attempts.

Rather than just carrying out the original booking, we gave the customer a call and talked them through what we'd found.

No sales pitch.
Just an honest conversation.

A single-stage correction would definitely improve the finish, but if they wanted to remove the vast majority of the defects, this was a two-stage + correction all day long.

After seeing the pictures and videos from a test spot for themselves, they agreed.

The extra time made all the difference.

A heavy cutting stage removed the bulk of the defects before a refinement stage restored the gloss and clarity, leaving the paint looking how it should have all along. We removed probably 90% of the defects on this job.

Followed up with .co ceramic coatings

PPF on the B Pillars (check out the before and after).

One of the things we pride ourselves on is giving honest advice.

Sometimes we'll tell someone their paint is far better than they think, like the M4 earlier this week.

Sometimes we will tell a client we can't PPF their car because it is too damaged or there is corrosion etc.

Or that their car booked in for a Multi stage correction may only actually need a 2 stage correction.

Other times, like this Mercedes, we'll explain why spending a little more now will allow us to achieve a much better result.

Either way, the recommendations are based on the condition of the car, and the best "value for money" - which isn't always the cheapest option.

This Mk5 Volkswagen Golf GTI was a bit of a nostalgic one for us.

Dan and I have owned more Mk5 Golfs than we can probably remember. In fact, they're the reason we met in the first place.

It was only a couple of years ago we restored a lovely Edition 30 (video on YouTube for that one).

Years ago we were both heavily involved in the Mk5 scene, I helped run mk5golfgti.co.uk , and met Dan buying some Powerflex bushes on his driveway, and somehow that eventually turned into running a detailing business together over a decade later.

So when we get the opportunity to work on one, it always hits in the feels a little bit.

This one had definitely been enjoyed.

Black paint that had slowly turned more grey than black thanks to years of swirl marks and general wear.

There were also a few areas of body damage that we carefully touched in to reduce their appearance. Not invisible, but a big improvement. Saving the need for a respray in the short term.

We started with a full decontamination and clay bar treatment before carrying out a full two-stage paint correction to bring the paint back to life. (Heavy cut and refinement).

Once the polishing was finished, we protected everything with .co Alpha Quartz ceramic coating.

The rest of the car got the same attention.

Door shuts cleaned.

Engine bay detailed. Yes you can clean engine bays. No it doesn't damage them.

Interior deep cleaned with the carpets wet-vacced, leather seats scrubbed, and years of built-up grime removed.

The headlights had also seen better days, being rarer Xenon units, which are hard to source these days - so we restored them before protecting them with PPF to help keep them clear for years to come.

By the time it left, it genuinely looked like a different car.

The paint had gone from looking tired and washed out to the deep black it should have been all along.

Cars like this remind us why we still enjoy what we do.

Sometimes it's not about working on the newest or most expensive cars.

Sometimes it's about bringing an old favourite back to life.

The famous last words that every detailer has heard it...

"It's not that bad."

Usually, that's the point where you quietly prepare yourself for the worst.

This time though...

The owner was right.

This BMW G82 M4 came in for our single-stage correction and, once it was prepped and under the lights, it was actually in really good condition.

There were a few light swirl marks and the usual signs of use, but nothing like we often see on most of the cars that come through our doors.

It was obvious the owner looked after it properly.

Cars don't stay like this by accident.

Good washing techniques, decent products and taking a bit of care all add up.

Instead of chasing major defects, this job was about refining the finish and getting the paint looking its best again.

After our single-stage correction, the gloss and clarity were back where they should be, before we protected everything with our 3-year ceramic coating .co - to help make future maintenance easier. You can see the beading in the pics above.

Included in all our details are a decent clean of the engine bay, and an interior valet to make it fresh again.

Sometimes the most satisfying jobs aren't the dramatic transformations.

They're the ones where the owner has already done most things right, and we're just adding the finishing touch.

It made the handover easy too.

No long explanation of what we'd fixed.

The owner just collected the sharper, glossier version of the M4 he already loved and cherished.

I wish more cars arrived like this.

It certainly keeps my machines happier. 😄

Pics by me.
