OTD is born out of 3 peoples’ mutual love for all things automotive - not to

mention our borderline obsession with things being done right. All of us have been in and around the car and detailing industry for a considerable amount of time. Between us we have over 30 years’ experience working on making cars look their best, and we have all been enthusiasts for a lifetime. We have created a fully equipped studio with dedicated detailing bays and a large clean room for Paint Protection Film installation, and even our own on-site "spotless water" - which is used throughout the process to ensure no watermarks and the best possible finish. Just because the car is new doesn’t mean it is perfect.

New cars often have contamination from transport and manufacturing, combined with poor handling at dealers

Always invest in a proper paint correction and ceramic coating from a specialist detailer

Do not fall victim to overpriced or poor quality dealership offerings...

Just seen yet another Facebook post from someone unhappy with their dealership “ceramic coating”… and I’m fed up of reading it.

I’m also fed up of people being misled.

What’s worse is the long-term impact - it puts people off ceramic coatings altogether because they think that’s just how they perform. It’s not.

The issue isn’t ceramic coatings. It’s how they’re being sold and applied.

At most dealerships, “ceramic coating” is a high-margin add-on. It sounds like a premium upgrade, but the reality is very different:

- Applied quickly by sub contractor, not trained/experienced detailers

- Little to no proper prep before application

- No machine polishing to remove defects

- Lower-grade, bulk coatings used

- Big claims on durability that don’t hold up (lifetime etc).

And this is the key point most people don’t realise:

A ceramic coating will seal in whatever is underneath it.

If the paint hasn’t been properly decontaminated or corrected, you’re sealing in swirl marks, contamination, and poor finish… then paying hundreds for the privilege.

You cannot just put a ceramic over poorly prepped paint

Typical dealership price: £300 - £800
Typical outcome: underwhelming gloss, short lifespan, difficult maintenance

When I get calls almost daily saying "my dealer has offered me a ceramic coating for £600" I tell them "Irrespective of if you book in with me , do not spend money at the dealerships".

Now while professional new car details may be the same sort of money (or more) - wouldn't you rather put your hard earned cash towards a proprr service?

Now compare that to a proper professional job:

- Full decontamination before anything touches the paint

- Machine polishing to improve clarity and remove defects (swirl marks/light scratches etc)

- Professional-grade coatings with proven durability

- Controlled environment for proper application and curing

- Clear aftercare advice so your coating actually lasts

The difference isn’t small. You see it immediately, and you feel it every time you wash the car.

If you’ve had a bad experience with a dealership coating, don’t write off ceramic coatings completely.

Done properly, they’re one of the best ways to protect your car and keep it looking sharp long term.

Just make sure you’re paying for a proper job done by a proper company, that is experienced with a proven track record of quality work.

Range Rover SVR , a fairly recent purchase as we understand it.

The owner of this V8 powered luxo-barge was unhappy with the prep from the selling dealer, and the Paintwork in general was typical of a Range Rover...
