We often speak to housing providers dealing with the same frustrating problem: rats are removed from a property, only for them to return weeks or months later.

It’s incredibly stressful for residents and can leave housing teams facing repeated complaints and contractor callouts without ever feeling like the problem has been properly resolved.

The issue is that removing the rats doesn’t necessarily stop more from getting in. With the BPCA estimating that around 80% of rodent infestations originate from the drainage system, the original access route often remains open.

That’s exactly why RatGate should form part of a long-term rodent prevention strategy. Fitted inside the drain, the device allows water and waste to flow out normally while preventing rats from travelling in the opposite direction and entering the property.

For housing providers, installing RatGates can help prevent repeat infestations, reduce ongoing callouts and give residents greater peace of mind that the source of the problem has been addressed.

Our latest blog looks at how housing associations and social housing providers can identify vulnerable properties and move from repeated treatment to long-term prevention.

We’re excited to announce that we are looking for a Business Development Executive to join the RatGate team.

RatGate has experienced strong growth over the past few years, with an expanding network of installers, distributors and commercial customers across the UK. We’re now looking for someone proactive and commercially minded to help us build on that momentum.

This is a hands-on business development role focused on identifying new opportunities, carrying out proactive outreach, booking and attending sales meetings, managing customer relationships and helping our partners grow their RatGate sales.

You’ll also play an important role in managing the sales pipeline, supporting new customer onboarding, attending industry events and helping more businesses understand how RatGate products can prevent rats from entering properties through drainage systems.

It’s a varied opportunity within a growing UK business, with plenty of scope to make the role your own and have a genuine impact on the next stage of our development.

The position is primarily home-based, with UK travel for customer meetings and events. The successful candidate will ideally be based within easy travelling distance of Warwick, where our internal team meetings usually take place.

We’re looking for someone with at least two years’ experience in sales, business development, account management or another customer-facing commercial role.

Learn more about the opportunity at www.ratgate.co.uk/careers.

To apply, please email your CV and covering letter to [email protected].

Please share this post with anyone who you think could be a great fit for the RatGate team.

One thing we’ve learned from designing and manufacturing products is that you have to listen to the people actually fitting them.

RatGates aren’t always fitted in perfect conditions like they are on a test bench. They are fitted in real chambers, on real jobs, by pest controllers and drainage engineers who are trying to stop rats getting into their customers’ homes and businesses.

They understand the challenges better than anyone, from awkward access and restricted chambers to explaining to the customer why drainage protection is so important.

A good example for us is the patented liftable flap on RatGate. This was developed because of feedback from the people using the product, and it is the only product on the market that allows drain access from the top of the chamber without having to remove the gate.

That is essential when pest controllers or drainage engineers need access for rodding, CCTV work or maintenance.

The same applies to our Slimline RatGate. That was also designed around installer feedback, giving them a better option for angled pipes and restricted drain chambers where a standard valve may not be the best fit.

But listening to installers is not just about the product itself. It is also about the support around it — helping them explain to customers why drainage protection matters, giving clear advice when they need it, providing good customer service, and making sure products are available quickly with next day delivery wherever possible.

At RatGate, we want to make products that work properly in the real world, and support the people fitting them properly too.

That only happens when you keep listening.

Today, we are at the British Pest Control Association Cardiff Forum at the New House Country Hotel in Thornhill — a beautiful location nestled next to the stunning Wenallt Forest 🌳

If you’re here today, come and say hello 👋 we’d love to chat to you about all things pest control, drainage, rodent prevention and, of course, RatGate.

And if you’re a pest controller and have never been to a BPCA Forum, we would highly recommend them. We have been to many of them up and down the country and they are always a great day for learning, sharing ideas, keeping up to date with the industry and meeting others in the trade.

One thing we’ve noticed more and more from speaking to people across the pest control and drainage industries is just how much urban environments are contributing to rat activity.

It’s not one single issue. It’s the combination of dense populations, food waste, busy commercial areas, older infrastructure and interconnected drainage systems that creates the problem.

In towns and cities, rats have everything they need: food, shelter and hidden routes to move between locations. That’s why it’s so important to look beyond the visible infestation and ask where the problem is actually starting.

Drainage systems play a much bigger role than people realise, with 80% of rat infestations originating from sewers. If rats are entering through the drainage system, treatment alone won't solve the underlying issue. This is where many businesses and property owners get stuck in a frustrating cycle.

- Rats appear inside the building.
- Treatment is carried out.
- Activity reduces.
- But the drainage access point remains open.

Over time, rats are able to re-enter through the same route and the problem returns.

In many cases, the issue is not that pest control has failed. It is that the building has not been properly protected against re-entry.

We’ve written a new blog looking at why urban environments have become the perfect storm for rat activity, how rats are using drainage systems to enter buildings, and why prevention at source is becoming more important.

You can read it here: https://www.ratgate.co.uk/post/why-urban-environments-have-become-the-perfect-storm-for-rat-activity

We’d be really interested to hear what others are seeing, especially those working in pest control, drainage, facilities management and property maintenance.
