Brighton & Hove will become a single, citywide Smoke Control Area (SCA), replacing the five existing zones. Brighton & Hove City Council’s cabinet approved the change on 14 May 2026, following a six-week public consultation held between 19 January and 1 March 2026. This change will see the first update to these smoke control zones since the 1970s and will replace five smaller designated areas with one citywide zone.

This is not a ban on wood burners. If you live in Brighton or Hove, you can still use your log burner during winter to stay warm – there are just a few rules you need to follow.

🟠 Make note of the alarm's expiry date and replace it when necessary

Government has proposed mandatory labels for both solid fuel appliances and fuel sold in the UK. The labels will likely include emissions ratings, pictograms of applicable fuel, and health warning statements. This change means all log burners and firewood sold in the UK would need to display labels.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an extremely poisonous gas that has no smell or taste. It can be left undetected if no CO alarm is present. 🚨

CO can be present in the fumes from the combustion of fuels that aren’t burnt under the correct conditions. Fuels such as gas, oil, solid mineral fuel, and biomass all have the potential to emit CO.

No Falls Week takes place 18-22 May this year, and the No Falls Foundation is continuing to champion safe working at height. HETAS is proud to support the meaningful campaign and help spread awareness across our industry, helping to prevent injuries and fatalities.

Recent statistics from the Health and Safety Executive reveal that 28% of deaths in the workplace between 2024 and 2025 occurred due to falls from a height.

Government has proposed a new smoke emission limit for stoves: 1g/h (+0.1g per 0.3kW of output). This limit would only affect new stoves placed on the market – it would not affect any wood burners already installed in homes. This follows new log burner rules in the UK for 2026, but isn’t anything to be concerned about.
