The only unwanted guests this weekend should be wearing costumes!

Halloween is here, and we're quite happy to welcome:
Ghosts
Witches
Vampires
Fake spiders
Decorative bats
But the mice, rats and actual creepy crawlies can stay outside, thank you very much!

With colder evenings arriving, now is exactly when some pests begin looking for warm, sheltered places.

So, while you're opening the door to your trick-or-treaters, make sure there aren't any other little entrances around your property inviting something else in!

Not everything flying around at Halloween is a pest!

Bats might be everywhere on our Halloween decorations, but real bats are an important part of our wildlife and are legally protected in the UK.
If we discover signs of bats or a bat roost while working at a property, we don't simply carry on with pest-control work that could disturb them.
We stop and make sure the appropriate specialist advice is sought.

So, if you think bats might be sharing your home or building, don't disturb them or try to remove them yourself.

The Bat Conservation Trust is a great place to seek advice.

Halloween bats? Absolutely.
Disturbing the real ones? Definitely not.

Some things simply can't be learnt from a book.

Tomorrow is National Mentoring Day, and that's something we feel particularly strongly about at MPE.

Qualifications and courses are incredibly important in pest management, but there's another part of learning that only comes from being out there doing the job.
Watching someone experienced investigate a site.
Understanding why they ask certain questions.
Seeing how they approach an unusual problem.
Learning from the things that haven't gone to plan as well as those that have.

We've been incredibly fortunate to have people within our industry willing to share their knowledge and experience with Nick as he develops his career.
That's how an industry grows.

Knowledge shouldn't stop with one generation of experts; it should be shared with the next.

What does a pest controller do on a routine visit when there aren't any pests?

Hopefully… quite a lot!
A good commercial pest-control contract isn't about waiting for something to go wrong.

During routine visits, we can be:
Inspecting for early signs of activity
Checking monitoring points
Identifying potential entry points
Looking at waste and environmental risks
Recording findings for your records and audits
Recommending preventative action

Sometimes the best result from a pest-control visit is:
"Nothing to report."
Because prevention is always preferable to discovering a problem once it's established.

It's colder outside… so flea season must be over, right?

Unfortunately, not necessarily.

Once our heating goes on and pets spend more time indoors, our homes can continue to provide the warmth fleas need.

If you have pets:
Wash bedding regularly
Vacuum carpets, rugs and soft furnishings thoroughly
Speak to your vet about appropriate flea prevention for your pet
Keep an eye out for signs of activity
And if fleas have become established in the home, treating the animal alone may not deal with the whole problem because other life stages can be present in the environment.

Warm house + cosy carpets + furry residents can unfortunately make a comfortable winter home!

Things pest controllers notice that everyone else probably walks straight past…

Once you've worked in pest control for a while, apparently you can never switch it off!

We notice:
That tiny gap underneath a door
The bin lid that doesn't quite close
The little hole around a pipe
Vegetation touching the building
Where the fly killer has been positioned
Something suspicious tucked away in a corner
Gaps along rooflines and around buildings

Michelle and Nick can probably walk into somewhere for a coffee and have mentally completed half a pest inspection before they've ordered!

The good news is that spotting these little things before there's a problem is exactly what good pest prevention is about.

Before you kick through that lovely pile of autumn leaves…

Have a little think about who might already be living underneath it!

Leaf piles, overgrown vegetation, stacked timber and garden clutter can provide shelter for all sorts of wildlife, and potentially unwanted pests too. We're certainly not suggesting everyone needs a completely spotless garden. Wildlife needs somewhere to live too. But around your house, sheds, garages and commercial buildings, keeping vegetation and debris under control makes it much easier to spot activity and removes potential harbourage close to the property.

So, enjoy those crunchy autumn leaves… Just maybe don't investigate the suspicious-looking pile with your hands!

Would you know you had a rodent before you saw one?

Quite often, seeing the rodent isn't the first sign.

Keep an eye (and ear!) out for:
Small droppings, particularly around cupboards and food areas
Scratching or movement, especially at night
Gnaw marks on packaging, wood or cables
Shredded paper, fabric or other nesting material
An unusual stale smell
Signs of activity around hidden edges and undisturbed areas
Rodents are very good at staying out of sight, which means a problem can be developing before you ever spot one running across the floor.

As we move further into autumn and temperatures fall, it's a good time to start paying attention to those little clues.

Sometimes the evidence tells us far more than the actual sighting.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day.

Running a business can be brilliant, rewarding and exciting.
It can also be exhausting.
There are customers to look after, staff to support, paperwork, training, compliance, networking, finances and all the unexpected things that land in your lap when you're self-employed. And sometimes you can become so busy looking after everything and everyone else that you forget to check in with yourself.

So, this weekend, we're reminding ourselves to:
Take the break.
Go for the walk.
Have the coffee.
Talk to someone.
Laugh at something ridiculous.
Switch off for a while.
And check in on the people around you; sometimes a simple "How are you really?" can mean more than you realise.

Mental health matters every day, not just on World Mental Health Day.
