Wildfires triggered by heatwaves across Europe are shocking – and for some a tragedy.

They’re the most dramatic sign, this summer, of climate change in action.

While all eyes are on Bordeaux, central Spain and the Scottish Cairngorms, millions of properties here in the UK are at risk in more hidden ways.

Here’s what increasingly extreme cycles of summer drought and winter floods can do:

🌨️ Cause more flash flooding of homes and businesses.
🏚️ Extend the area where buildings are at most risk of subsidence.

We need to work together to tackle one of the most difficult insurance claims challenges – subsidence.

Catalyst’s Paul Duddle made the point as chairman of the Subsidence Forum when he welcomed delegates to the forum’s annual training day.

The latest Met Office report on climate change shows the heat is on for drainage and water supply networks + the response to subsidence. What was extreme weather in the 1990s is now the norm, it says.

This means to effectively assess and manage claims, insurance providers are going to need:

🔢 More, better and different data
🦌 Closer and more agile support from service providers to respond to extreme weather events
🏚️ A joined up approach to assessing the true impact of weather on drain and water networks, and the structures they support (think subsidence)
🧠 Access to more complex claims expertise
👩‍🏫 Plus training and knowledge sharing that helps their teams navigate a fast-changing claims environment

Watch out – surface water drains can block in summer too.

Especially after a heatwave. ☀️ ☀️☀️

Drains don’t get flushed as well in dry conditions, so when it does rain again, debris left in pipes can quickly get jammed, increasing the risk of surface water flooding.
