VOLUNTEER CALLOUT – BIRMINGHAM AREA 📣

Right now, we’re really feeling the strain. Due to some unavoidable personal circumstances, we’re down a couple of our volunteer drivers - and that sadly means fewer foxes can get the help they desperately need.

Foxes like the one pictured rely entirely on people giving up their time, their cars, and their kindness. Without drivers and rescuers, we simply can’t reach them. 💔

If you’re in or around Birmingham and can help as a volunteer rescuer or driver (even occasionally), you could make a life-saving difference. No experience needed - just compassion, reliability, and a willingness to help when you can. Full training given.

Boxing Day should be spent celebrating British wildlife, and yet it's a time when many worry for the lives of animals caught up in the so-called 'sport' of trail hunting.

We look forward to submitting evidence to the UK Government's trail hunting consultation in the new year, with evidence as to how this is being used as a smokescreen for illegal hunting and why it should be banned.

We will update our dedicated supporters about how you, too, can use your voice for animals 🦊

In the meantime, illegal hunting should be reported to the police, who will contact us if they require our assistance.

A portrait of Rosie in her prime. She really was a special fox, she opened my eyes up to how intelligent these animals are. Able to communicate with different vocalisations and body language, something you are able to pick up on if you ever win the confidence of a fox. Can you believe there are at least 28 different vocalisations a fox uses to communicate with, a sign of intelligence if ever there was one. The ghouls that chase these beautiful animals down pretend to talk with authority about foxes, but they haven't got a clue. How could they, they only ever see a fox running for its life.
This time of year, in my opinion, the most beautiful of British wildlife will be chased down by the ugliest of humans. Parading through towns and villages today, they'll put up a front, just like most organised crime gangs do. But once out of sight the criminality will continue. They'll allow the public to fuss the hounds while collecting money to aid their criminality and then in the next breath tell you they'll slaughter their dogs if they're not allowed to continue with the smokescreen they call "Trail" hunting. Apparently the Wynnstay killed again on Christmas Eve, they'll be out again today.
No doubt there'll be more so called "accidents" if members of the public aren't out to stop them all across the country, giving up their Christmas, subject in many cases to verbal and physical abuse, hopefully this will be the last Christmas this has to happen.
From my experience, if Fox hounds are being worked, no matter what anyone tells you, foxes are the target.

❗️Help Protect Wildlife from Antifreeze Poisoning ❗️

As we head into the colder months, we want to raise awareness about the threat that antifreeze poses to both pets and wildlife.

Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, a highly toxic substance that can be lethal if ingested by animals. Its sweet taste can attract animals, putting them at risk of kidney failure and, in many cases, a painful and untimely death.

To safeguard wildlife and pets, please consider these steps:

- Use propylene glycol–based antifreeze: This alternative is less toxic to animals and poses a lower risk if ingested.

- Store antifreeze safely: Keep all antifreeze products securely out of reach and in tightly sealed containers.

- Maintain your vehicle: Check for leaks and promptly address any spills to prevent accidental exposure to animals.

If you suspect an animal (wild or domestic) has come into contact with antifreeze, seek immediate wildlife rescue or veterinary assistance. Every minute counts, and swift action can save a life.

Panic stations, people! The countdown has officially hit single figures and the festive rush is well and truly on 🎅✨

Unfortunately, wildlife don’t celebrate Christmas, so while we may all be tucking into mince pies and leftovers, we’ll of course still be here for any fox that needs us throughout the entire festive period 🦊❤️

If you do decide to leave out a little something for your local foxes, please remember these simple but important rules:
🚫 NO chocolate 🚫 NO grapes or raisins
🚫 NO onions or garlic 🚫 NO spicy foods
🚫 NO cooked bones 🚫 NO alcohol

Stick to safe, plain foods only – their tummies will thank you!

And as for alcohol… we’re sure there won’t be any of that left over anyway 😉🍷

If you are topping up anti-freeze or screen wash in your car, and you spill some, please clean it up.

A few drops of either, followed by rain, creates a puddle of sweet tasting liquid for pets AND wildlife to drink. Poisoning with both of these items is horrific, it's quick-acting and rapidly causes issues like kidney failure.

Signs of antifreeze poisoning - the animal may become wobbly, start dribbling, or vomit soon after drinking it. At the Hogs Bum we have had 3 cases in the past two weeks and all the hoglets died.

A few minutes cleaning up spills will save lives.
