Which eco friendly cleaning materials are effective

Effective eco-friendly cleaning materials include white vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda for general cleaning and disinfecting as well as plant-based commercial products like Method and Ecover.

White Vinegar: An acidic degreaser and disinfectant, great for glass, non-natural material surfaces, hard water stains.

Baking Soda: Mild abrasive for scrubbing sinks, bathtubs, ovens and a good deodoriser; usually used mixed with water to create a paste.

Lemon Juice: Its natural acid cuts through grease, disinfects, and deodorises; great for cutting boards and brass.

Castile Soap. An oil based soap that is gentle enough to be used for body, baby and pet care alongside household purposes like cleaning floors, dishes, laundry.

Hydrogen Peroxide: An effective and eco-friendly bleach alternative for disinfecting and whitening.

How to store cleaning products safely

Always read the instructions on how to store a product safely.

Keep them in their original containers.

Avoid mixing products together. Some products can produce toxic gasses when mixed with other chemicals.

Keep them locked away in a cool and dry place and out of reach of children and pets.
Make sure the bottles are placed carefully if they are kept on a high shelf to avoid a risk of them falling on you or to the ground when you need them.

How to clean a microwave

Take the turntable and any racks out. Wash them in hot, soapy water.

Wipe out any crumbs or dried food.

Fill a bowl halfway with water, place a lemon cut in 4 slices and microwave on full power for 2 minutes or until the glass on the door steams.
Let it sit with the door closed for another 5 minutes after the program finishes. The steam will loosen any food particles. Remove the bowl and wipe the interior surfaces with a damp cloth. Dry with a towel and return the turntable and rack.

Wipe the exterior, handle and control panel with a clean damp cloth and a mild multipurpose spray.

To get rid of any persistent odours you can leave a bowl with baking soda in the microwave overnight with the door closed which will absorb bad smells.

How to clean skylights

Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in a bucket of warm water. Soak a soft sponge or cloth in the solution and scrub the glass, working in horizontal and then vertical direction.

Stubborn spots like tree sap or bird droppings can be treated with white vinegar dissolved with water. Apply the solution and let it sit for a few minutes before rubbing the dirt out.

Rinse the skylight thoroughly making sure there is no soap residue which can result in streaks. Remove excess water with a squeegee working from top to bottom and wiping the blade regularly.

Finally, wipe the glass with clean soft cloths working in one direction only.

Inspect the glass from different angles to ensure there are no water marks or streaks.

How to clean mirrors

Start by removing dust from the mirror with a cloth or a duster.

If there are tough stains like from hair spray or toothpaste rub these out with the help of something containing alcohol and a cotton pad.

Spray the mirror with a commercial window cleaner or a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar. If the mirror is very dirty it is better to spray the cloth you will clean with instead of directly onto the mirror.

Use a clean microfiber cloth and wipe the mirror from top to bottom. Then dry and buff the surface with a dry soft cloth using up-and-down or circular motions to prevent streaks and add shine to the glass.

How to wash gym clothes

Always check the instructions on the labels before washing sports clothes for the first time.

Generally, they should be washed using warm or even cold settings. It is better to choose detergents for delicate fabrics.
The use of conditioner is fine.

The clothes should be turned inside out to wash and then air dried although if the instructions allow tumble drying on low temperature, that is also fine.

It is best not to leave used gym clothes in the laundry bag or basket for a long time but to wash them as soon as possible after use.

How to clean silver

Get a plastic container and line it with aluminium foil with the shiny side up. Fill the container with boiling water and add 2 table spoons of baking soda per litre of water.
Then place the silver inside making sure all of the items touch the bottom.

Some bubbling process will start and the tarnish will be lifted to the surface of the water in a while.
After 10 minutes take the silver out carefully as it will be hot. Remove any stains left by rubbing it with a soft cloth.

If the silver is badly tarnished you will need to repeat the procedure a few times.

How to wash cashmere

Use a specialised wool detergent and avoid fabric softener. Choose Delicate or Woolen cycle and a low spin. Turn the garment inside out and put it in a mesh bag.

When the cashmere has been washed roll it in a towel to soak some of the water, then return to its original shape and let it air dry flat.

If you prefer to hand wash cashmere choose mild detergent or baby shampoo and lukewarm water. Submerge the item in and gently move and squeeze it in the water. Drain and refill with clean water. Lightly squeeze the garment to remove excess water without twisting or wringing it.

Dry the same way like after a machine wash. Roll in a towel, reshape and leave it flat to air dry over a towel.

How to clean a mouldy washing machine

Start by cleaning the seal and the drawer. Wipe the seal with a cloth dampened in white vinegar or a cleaner with bleach. You can let the solution stay for 10 minutes or so. Remove the drawer and wash it thoroughly with hot water and soap. Dry it before putting it back.

Then pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum and ΒΌ cup of baking soda and water in the dispenser drawer and run a washing cycle on the hottest setting.
For stubborn mould you can opt to use bleach in the drum instead of vinegar but never mix bleach and vinegar.

Wipe the drum and door dry after the cycle and leave the door open to air dry completely.
