Completed an installation of new cast-iron guttering onto a 15th century fisherman’s cottage in west Looe today. The rain helped us with our flow check 😀

It was ‘out with the old and in with the new’ for our customers last week.
In 1985 when the bungalow was built, we’re sure that this brown square line guttering looked great. But styles have changed and this place is undergoing a makeover. With new, white windows and a chic, black front door, the customers decided on a two tone colour scheme for their new fascia, soffits and guttering.
We think it looks really smart!

Garden make over.

Last month we worked on this little project. The customer wanted the original patio (which was all sunken) expanded and relaid. They wanted two additional seating areas added and and then the old brick wall replacing with oak sleepers. Finally we graded out a flat area at the top of the garden and laid some turf.
The customer wants to set the steps and top patio area themselves once they have decided on exactly what finish they want, but we left them with the foundations to get them started.

It was satisfying to see the transformation from an overgrown, poorly maintained area with shingle and pebbles everywhere, to a low-maintenance, airy space where the couple can now entertain friends and enjoy the summer evenings.

A small repair or adjustment can make all the difference to the lifetime of your house.
In the top photo, can you see that the guttering above a bay window has been butted up to the wall? This has left a small, 5mm gap. It seems like nothing, but you can see that underneath, the wall has gone green. Water from the gutters has been pouring through this gap for years and running down the wall. Left like this, there would no doubt be resulting damp issues inside the house.
What’s the solution?
In the second photo you can see that we brought the gutter back from the wall, added an end cap and then channeled the water from the roof into the guttering using a small piece of lead. Now all the water is contained in the gutters and the problem is solved. It’s not a big job for us to do, but makes all the difference.

Another happy customer

We completed this job for a customer a few weeks ago and we’re really pleased with how it looks.
The composite cladding on this gable-end looks so smart. This house is close to the sea and gets a real battering from the prevailing winds in the area. This type of cladding will withstand the pressures that the elements will put upon it.
We also installed the dry verge system and they had new deep flow guttering fitted too.
The result is a complete makeover on his part of the property and further maintenance and care will now be a lot less expensive and time consuming for them.

Some more outside property work for this customer last week. They wanted their grassy, sloped pathway changed for a hardcore surface which would drain better and be less muddy to walk on in winter. Their choice of material matches well with the property.

We were using our staging equipment today to fix some guttering above the porch area.
This equipment is great! It gives us safe access to a lot of areas without the need for full scaffolding. If possible, we try to use this equipment when working over porches/conservatories or if we need to work on a long length of guttering.
It beats the risk of working for too long off a ladder and saves the customers money on scaffolding, thus keeping everyone happy.
