One of the biggest misconceptions with Victorian tiled floors is that damaged-looking areas automatically require replacement. In this case, the floor was solid, so replacement was not recommended. Preserving original tiles wherever possible is often the best long-term solution, helping to maintain the integrity and character of the floor while avoiding unnecessary disruption.

After assessing the condition of the floor, we carried out the following restoration process:
πŸ’š Double-stripped the existing coatings and residues
πŸ’š Deep cleaned the Victorian tiles and grout lines
πŸ’š Neutralised the floor to remove any remaining cleaning residues
πŸ’š Applied a breathable, colour-enhancing sealer to protect the floor while allowing moisture vapour to pass through naturally

This Victorian tile hallway in Bulkington is now cleaner and brighter, with enhanced colour, breathable protection, and all of its original charm preserved.

Sometimes the best restoration work isn't about replacing what's there...it's about carefully preserving it.

July may have seen fewer projects, but the scale and complexity of the work certainly made up for it. From large-scale limestone restorations and Corian worktop repairs to wood floor refinishing projects...

We also enjoyed a family holiday in Malta before returning this week, refreshed and ready for a busy August ahead. πŸ”…

Here's a look back at what we worked on:
πŸ’š Limestone Restoration – Austrey One of our most extensive stone restoration projects to date. These floors underwent a complete transformation, including:
➑️ Removal of all existing grout lines
➑️ Regrouting throughout
➑️ Mechanical grinding to remove lippage and surface etching
➑️ Crack repairs
➑️ Tile relaying and specialist restoration work And much more!

πŸ’š Corian Worktop Restoration – Nuneaton These grey Corian worktops had become scratched and dull over time. Using our Hyper Grinder Orbit CT Countertop Polishing Machine, we mechanically refinished the surfaces to restore clarity, smoothness, and appearance without the need for replacement.

πŸ’š Pine Floor Sanding & Refinishing – Witherley Parish Room This well-used pine floor was professionally sanded, minor repairs were completed, and it was refinished with a durable 2K lacquer system. The before-and-after is incredible!

πŸ’š Jerusalem Gold Limestone Restoration – Atherstone Another natural stone project saw us restoring these beautiful Jerusalem Gold Limestone floors through specialist cleaning, repair and restoration techniques.

πŸ’š Wood Floor Test Patches Before heading to Malta, we carried out a series of stain and finish test patches on upcoming wood floor projects. Following our return this week, work is now underway on these exciting projects

We have plenty more πŸ“Έ and videos to share from each of these restorations, so keep an eye on our page over the coming weeks!!

Thank you to all of our customers, both new and existing, for your patience whilst we were away and for continuing to support our family-run business.

Before heading off on holiday, we carried out test patches on these pine and oak floors, helping our customers choose the perfect finish before the restoration begins this week.

Test patches are a key part of the wood floor restoration process. Different timbers absorb stains, oils and finishes in different ways, so testing products on the actual floor provides a true representation of the final result. It allows customers to compare options side by side and make an informed decision with confidence.

For the pine floor, the chosen finish will involve a primer and multiple coats of durable two-component (2K) lacquer for long-lasting protection.

The oak floor will be finished with a two-component (2K) solid oil, designed to highlight the natural grain of the wood while providing excellent durability and a beautiful natural finish.

We're looking forward to getting back on site this week, refreshed and recharged, to begin the full restoration process across these floors.

Stay tuned for the progress and final results πŸ‘€

Warning: Extra Long Video... Sorry, Not Sorry! ⚠️

This three-finger parquet floor restoration in Hinckley takes you behind the scenes of the sanding and refinishing process, showcasing the specialist Bona equipment we use and the techniques learned through Bona training to achieve professional results.

It was an opportunity to work on an increasingly rare pattern parquet floor. What was originally believed to be Oak revealed a surprise as we sanded back the surface the timber was actually Teak.

Through the sanding process, the rich golden-brown tones and natural grain of the Teak began to emerge.

If you’re interested in how a parquet floor is restored, grab a coffee β˜•οΈ and enjoy the video. Follow the journey from worn and scratched to restored and refinished as we uncover this classic and striking three-finger parquet floor.

A big thank you to Red Monkey Signs - Leicester

Whilst we were in Atherstone carrying out a wood floor sanding and refinishing project, the neighbours spotted our van signage and asked us to take a look at their Jerusalem Gold limestone floor.

Following a brief survey and assessment, we provided a quotation for the restoration works, which included:
πŸ’š Removal of the existing wax coating to eliminate product build-up and allow the stone to breathe naturally.
πŸ’š Deep cleaning of the limestone and grout lines using specialist stone-safe cleaning products.
πŸ’š Neutralisation of the floor to ensure all cleaning residues are removed and the surface is correctly prepared for further treatment.
πŸ’š Diamond polishing to refine the surface and restore a consistent satin sheen while reducing signs of wear, surface scratches and light etching.
πŸ’š Application of Faber Hidro 150, a high-performance impregnating sealer designed to provide long-lasting protection while maintaining the natural appearance of the limestone.

It's always rewarding when local projects lead to new opportunities, and this one came simply from the customer seeing our van outside a neighbouring property.

πŸ’‘ Why doesn't mopping clean my tiled floor? Because mopping is designed to maintain a floor, not deep clean it.

Every time a floor is walked on, tiny particles of dirt, grease, oils, pet hair and dust settle into the textured surface of tiles and the porous grout lines. A mop can remove loose dirt from the surface, but it often can't reach deep into those pores.

Over time, mopping can sometimes make the problem worse because:

πŸ’š Dirty water is spread across the floor – Unless the water is changed regularly, dirt is often moved around rather than removed.

πŸ’š Grout is porous – Like a sponge, grout absorbs dirt, grease and spills. A mop glides over the surface but cannot extract contaminants trapped below.

πŸ’š Cleaning product residue builds up – Many household cleaners leave behind a residue that attracts more dirt, causing floors to become dull and sticky. Always check product labels to ensure they are suitable for your tile type before use!

πŸ’š Bacteria and grease remain behind – Particularly in kitchens, utility rooms and commercial settings, grease and bacteria can become embedded within grout lines and textured tiles.

Professional deep cleaning uses specialist cleaning solutions, agitation equipment and extraction methods to break down and remove contamination rather than simply moving it around the floor.

At BC Stone and Floor Care, our aim is to leave tiles thoroughly cleaned and neutralised, with grout lines restored to a more uniform appearance and floors ready for ongoing maintenance or sealing.

Whilst we’re away on holiday, he’s busy checking the content, approving the posts, and making sure no emails get answered... by lying across the keyboard 😹
