🔥 What a difference this one made! 🔥
This customer wanted to say goodbye to their dated stone fireplace and create something that better suited the style of their home.

We started by carefully removing the original fireplace before preparing the wall and installing this beautiful Axon Madrid Limestone Fireplace, complete with a Blazebright Accra Black Inset Electric Fire.

One thing I love about jobs like this is seeing just how much a new fireplace can change a room. It instantly becomes the focal point, making the whole space feel brighter, more modern and much more inviting.

Although most people know me for wood-burning stove installations, I also install electric fireplaces like this, as well as gas fireplaces (where supplied and connected by a Gas Safe engineer), complete fireplace renovations and bespoke hearths. Every home is different, and it's all about finding the right solution for the customer.

We're not quite finished yet! The customer is having new carpets, skirting boards and a dado rail fitted next week, and I honestly can't wait to see the finished room. I'll definitely be posting an update once everything is complete because I think it's going to look absolutely stunning.

What does a stove installer do on a Saturday afternoon when they've got a bit of spare time? 🤔

Apparently... restore old slate hearths! 😅

This reclaimed slate hearth had definitely seen better days. Covered in scratches, old adhesive, paint, plaster and years of wear and tear, most people would probably have written it off.

A few hours of sanding, cleaning and refinishing later, and it's already looking like a completely different piece. There's still a little way to go, but it'll soon be installed in its new home along with a reclaimed cast iron insert fire, looking as good as new.

One thing I've always believed is that quality materials deserve a second chance. Natural slate is incredibly durable, and with a bit of time, patience and the right techniques, it can often be restored rather than replaced.

It's all part of the job that people don't usually get to see, but it's something I genuinely enjoy.

⚡ Whether you have a heat pump, gas boiler or electric heating... does it make sense to have a second way of heating your home?

This article has certainly got people talking.

Firstly, it's worth pointing out that the flexibility schemes being discussed are voluntary. The aim is to encourage households to reduce electricity demand during periods of peak usage in return for incentives or lower energy bills, not to force people to take part.

But it does raise an interesting question...
What if, instead of relying solely on electricity to heat your home during those peak periods, you simply lit your wood-burning stove?

Rather than drawing large amounts of electricity from the grid, a modern wood-burning stove can comfortably heat your main living space, allowing you to reduce or even switch off your central heating for a while.

Many of my customers already do exactly that.

It's not about replacing your primary heating system, it's about having another option when you need it.

One thing that's often misunderstood is how much modern wood-burning stoves have improved.

Today's Ecodesign stoves are engineered to burn fuel far more cleanly and efficiently than older appliances. When they're professionally installed, properly maintained, and burning certified Ready to Burn wood with a moisture content below 20%, they produce dramatically lower emissions while achieving efficiencies of 75% or more.

In fact, according to Woodsure, modern Ecodesign stoves burning dry wood are responsible for less than 0.3% of the UK's total annual PM2.5 emissions. That's a figure many people are surprised to hear because older stoves and open fires are often grouped together with today's modern appliances, despite there being a significant difference in emissions.

Wood is also recognised as a renewable fuel when sourced from sustainably managed forests, where harvested trees are replaced through continuous woodland management.

For me, though, the biggest benefit isn't politics... It's resilience.

✔️ A warm home during a power cut.
✔️ Less reliance on a single heating system.
✔️ The ability to reduce your electricity consumption during expensive peak periods if you choose to.
✔️ A cosy, natural heat that many people simply love.

Whether your home is heated by a heat pump, gas boiler or electric heating, I genuinely believe there's a strong case for having a secondary source of heat.

This was a really rewarding project to complete.

The fireplace had been sitting unused, but the customer wanted to bring it back to life with the warmth and atmosphere that only a real wood-burning stove can provide.

We installed a Hunter Parkray Aspect 5 wood-burning stove on a bespoke honed slate hearth, making full use of the customer's own beautiful plaster cast surround. The result is a timeless feature that suits the room perfectly and is ready to be enjoyed for many winters to come.

Another avoidable issue we came across this week...

The customer reported debris constantly falling into their stove despite recently having the chimney swept by another company.

On inspection, we found the liner adaptor had become disconnected from the flue pipe, allowing the vermiculite insulation surrounding the liner to spill down into the appliance.

A simple rivet or two during installation would likely have prevented this from happening.

It's the little details that make all the difference when fitting a flue system properly. 👍

This fireplace started life as a standard gas fire, but the customer wanted something that looked better, heated the room more effectively, and created a real focal point.

We removed the existing fire and transformed the opening with an Axon Brompton Limestone Fireplace, a reeded chamber, and an MI Fires Derwent Multi-Fuel Stove. The end result is a fireplace that's not only beautiful to look at but will provide efficient heat for many winters to come.
