Four Baby Raccoons… Behind a Shower!

This photo is from May, during one of our more challenging baby raccoon removals of the season.

A mother raccoon had chosen a very difficult-to-reach space behind a shower to raise her young. After carefully accessing the area, our team was able to safely remove all four 21 day old babies from the tight space.

Situations like this are exactly why baby season removals need to be handled carefully. When young raccoons are involved, it’s important to make sure every baby is found and safely removed before the entry hole is closed.

A mother squirrel was locked out of a home while her babies were still inside.

We were called to this property after the homeowners had hired a pest control company but continued hearing noises and were concerned the squirrel had found her way back into the house. When we arrived, we discovered that the other company had installed a raccoon one way door over the squirrel entry point.

Not only had the mother been locked away from her babies, but had she been inside the home when that one way door was installed, the setup could have prevented her from getting out as well.

As soon as we opened the screen covering the entry point, one of the baby squirrels actually came walking out of the hole toward us.

This is exactly why proper follow-ups are such an important part of wildlife removal. At Gates Wildlife, we don’t simply install a one way door and assume the job is finished.

Our cellular camera monitoring allows us to follow the animal’s activity in real time, observe how they respond to the removal process and identify behaviours that may indicate babies are still inside.

It also allows us to make adjustments when needed and confirm that the animals have exited safely and humanely before the job is considered complete. This is especially important during baby season as separating a mother from her young can create a much bigger problem and unnecessary suffering for the animals.

Wildlife removal isn’t just about getting animals out. It’s about making sure every animal is accounted for and removed safely and humanely. This technology takes much of the guesswork out of wildlife removal.

Thankfully, we were able to step in and make sure these little ones weren’t forgotten.

A pretty special little resident!

This Southern Flying Squirrel has taken up residence in one of the wildlife boxes I installed, and it’s always rewarding to see these boxes being put to good use.

Flying squirrels are nocturnal, which explains those noticeably large eyes that help them navigate in low-light conditions. Staying hidden during the day helps them stay safe from birds that hunt in the daylight.

Despite their name, they don’t actually fly. They glide from tree to tree using a membrane of skin that stretches between their front and back legs, allowing them to move through wooded areas with impressive control.

This one seems quite comfortable in their new home and judging by that face, I’d say she approves!

Most people have never heard of Baylisascaris, also known as raccoon roundworm, until they discover raccoons living on or around their property.

The parasite is carried by raccoons and its microscopic eggs can be passed through their f***s. People do not become infected simply by being near a raccoon or touching a contaminated surface. Infection occurs when the eggs are accidentally swallowed, which is why dropped food, unwashed hands, outdoor toys, soil and areas where children play can become a concern.

Why doesn’t the “10-second rule” apply if raccoons have been around your deck or backyard? Does bleach kill the eggs? Can you get it just by touching raccoon f***s?

Summer Babies! These baby raccoons were found in mid-July, and at approximately 21 days old, they’re a little later than we typically expect to see.

One possible reason? This past winter was colder than usual. While raccoons generally mate between January and March, prolonged cold weather can sometimes delay breeding for some mothers. A later mating season means later births, which is why we’re still finding very young babies well into July.

At around three weeks old, their eyes and ears are just opening, and they’re beginning to explore the world but they’re still completely dependent on their mother for warmth, protection, and food.

Every year is a little different, and nature doesn’t always follow the calendar. That’s why we always inspect carefully before sealing any wildlife entry point. Even in the middle of summer, there may still be a family inside.

Part 5 | The Happy Ending ❤️ Returning her home wasn’t the end of the story. Before leaving, we positioned one of our cellular cameras overlooking the den so we could monitor what happened next without disturbing the family.

The following morning, we eagerly checked the footage. Unfortunately, our camera battery died before we could capture everything that happened overnight. But there was one thing we knew for certain…she had made it home.

The best news was still to come. That very night, this mother raccoon did exactly what healthy mothers often do after a disturbance. One by one, she carefully relocated each of her babies from beneath the deck to a brand-new den site.

Because she received the medical care she needed, she was able to continue doing what mattered most, raising her family.

A few nights later, our camera captured the mother returning to check on her old den. She looked healthy and showed no signs of distress.

This story is about far more than one raccoon. Every year, Toronto Wildlife Centre treats thousands of sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals, many suffering because of preventable human impacts, including discarded litter.

Raccoon Rabies Cases Confirmed Near Ontario’s Border

We wanted to share this as an awareness update for our community.

Health officials have confirmed an ongoing outbreak of raccoon variant rabies in parts of Quebec and New York State. Since January 2026, more than 100 cases have been identified in wildlife in Quebec, with some cases occurring close to the Ontario border near Gananoque, Hill Island, and approximately 20 km east of Cornwall.

The important thing to know: There are currently no known cases of raccoon rabies in the Greater Toronto Area.

As a precaution, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is increasing surveillance in eastern Ontario and will be distributing oral rabies vaccine baits by air and by hand in areas including Gananoque, Ivy Lea, Wolfe Island, Cornwall, Johnstown, and Thousand Islands National Park. These vaccine baits are a proven wildlife management tool that help immunize raccoons, skunks, and foxes, reducing the spread of rabies before it reaches new areas.

Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system of mammals and is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. Although the risk to the public remains very low, it’s always important to take simple precautions:
 - Never approach or handle wild animals. - Keep your pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date.
 ⚠️ If you see wildlife that appears unusually aggressive, unusually tame, disoriented, staggering, or is found dead without an obvious cause, report it to the Ministry of Natural Resources Wildlife Health Information Line: 1-888-574-6656.

There is no reason for concern in the GTA, but we believe staying informed is the best way to protect both our communities and our local wildlife.
