Dry season in Townsville feels like the pest-free stretch of the year — and in some ways it is. Surface activity drops, mosquitoes ease off, and the garden stops producing the ant and cockroach pressure that peaks in the wet.

But ""quiet"" isn't the same as ""nothing happening."" Rodents are moving indoors as outdoor food dries up. Spiders are still building webs in every undisturbed corner. Cockroaches are nocturnal for a reason. Daylight sightings are rare precisely because a healthy colony has no need to forage where it's exposed — which means the absence of sightings tells you almost nothing about what's living behind your dishwasher.

The real indicators are quieter: a faint musty odour near appliances, small dark droppings resembling coffee grounds in cupboard corners, or tiny egg cases (oothecae) tucked into hinges and skirting gaps.
