🧽 CLEANER CONFESSIONS

HOW LONG DID IT ACTUALLY TAKE TO DEEP CLEAN THIS SHOWER?

The timer is in. ⏱️

Remember the shower I showed you before our break?

The one I said I was going to time properly rather than giving you a vague:

“Oh, probably about an hour.” 😂

Well…

⏱️ 1 HOUR 27 MINUTES.

That was the actual working time to bring this shower back through what most people would call a deep clean — although at this level I’d probably describe it more accurately as a shower restoration clean.

And importantly, that wasn't 1 hour and 27 minutes spent casually wiping over a shower.

That time included:

🧽 washing and scrubbing the full tiled shower area
🧽 working the grout lines
🧽 getting into the edges, corners and junctions
🧽 removing accumulated buildup around the lower tiles and floor edges
🧽 treating areas that needed additional attention
🚿 descaling the shower glass
🧼 rinsing and changing processes between products
⏱️ allowing the necessary dwell time for products to actually work

And this is exactly why I wanted to put a timer on one.

Because “clean the shower” isn't really a unit of time.

There is a massive difference between maintaining a shower regularly and coming into one periodically to remove the buildup that has accumulated between services.

THIS CLIENT IS A QUARTERLY SERVICE.

So we're not maintaining this shower every week or fortnight.

We come back approximately every three months, and by then we're dealing with what has happened during those months of normal household use.

That makes this a particularly good example of why the condition you're starting with matters just as much as the physical size of the shower.

And you'll notice I don't have the final glamour shot with the finished glass. 😂

There's actually a very good reason for that.

DEEP CLEANING CAN BE A TWO-STAGE PROCESS.

The chemistry I use for the grout/tile work and the chemistry required for mineral and limescale buildup on the glass are not products I simply mix, layer or use together.

One process needs to be completed properly.

Products need to be rinsed away as required.

The area needs to be appropriately ventilated and safe before moving onto the next chemistry.

Then the glass can be tackled.

So by the time I'd completed the second-stage glass descale, I needed to move on with the rest of the client's service rather than stop and conduct a photoshoot. 😂

Which probably makes these photos more representative of professional cleaning anyway.

THE JOB COMES BEFORE THE CONTENT.

I wasn't there for a before-and-after reel.

I was there to clean someone's home.

AND HERE'S SOMETHING ELSE THAT AFFECTS THE TIME: THE SHOWER HEAD. 🚿

This shower has a fixed shower head.

That might sound like a tiny detail, but from a cleaning perspective it matters.

When you've got a detachable handheld shower head, I can rinse walls, grout, corners, glass, edges and cleaning products away much more efficiently.

With a fixed shower head, you don't have that same ability to direct water exactly where it's needed.

So the cleaning process generally takes a little longer.

It might only be a relatively small amount of extra time during each service.

But if you're paying someone to clean your home regularly, those little amounts of time add up across a year.

THAT'S WHY I OFTEN RECOMMEND DETACHABLE SHOWER HEADS.

Not because they're some fancy cleaning gadget. 😂

Because they're a simple Home System that makes maintaining the shower easier.

They're useful for the person cleaning the home.

They're useful for the household between services.

They're great for quickly rinsing the shower walls.

They're handy for washing kids, pets or anything else life throws into the shower.

And most importantly from a paid-cleaning perspective:

If something makes a repetitive job quicker every single time we do it, you're potentially reducing paid labour over the life of that fixture.

A few minutes saved here.

A few minutes saved there.

Multiply that across weekly, fortnightly or even regular deeper services over several years and suddenly a relatively inexpensive hardware change makes a lot of sense.

That's the kind of thing I mean when I talk about Home Systems.

Sometimes making your home easier to maintain isn't about cleaning harder.

It's about changing something small so the job itself becomes easier.

AND HERE'S THE OTHER PART I REALLY WANTED TO SHOW.

Look at the original photos.

There wasn't some spectacular horror-show shower in front of us.

It was a real, used shower with accumulated buildup in the areas where buildup naturally occurs — grout, edges, corners, junctions and glass.

Those relatively small areas are exactly where a disproportionate amount of deep-cleaning time can disappear.

The large flat tile in the middle?

Relatively straightforward.

That grubby little line running along an edge?

That little bu**er can have completely different plans for my day. 😂

That's why quoting cleaning purely by the number of bathrooms, bedrooms or square metres only tells part of the story.

A shower cleaned every week or fortnight is an entirely different job from a shower I see every three months.

And a shower designed to be easily rinsed and maintained can be a different job again from one that isn't.

MAINTENANCE CLEANING KEEPS THINGS THERE.

DEEP CLEANING BRINGS THINGS BACK.

And good Home Systems can reduce the work required to do either.

No miracle spray.

No 30-second transformation.

And no pretending that every shower takes the same amount of time.

FINAL RESULT:

⏱️ 1 hour 27 minutes
🧽 Full tile wash and detailed scrub
🧼 Grout, edges, corners and junctions
🚿 Glass descale
🧪 Separate cleaning processes for different jobs
📅 Quarterly service — no Hailz maintenance between visits
🏡 Plus one very good example of why the way a home is set up affects the labour required to maintain it.

No staged dirt.
No miracle product.
No unsafe chemical shortcuts.
No judgement.

Just the actual time and work behind a real deep clean in a real home.

💚 A LITTLE STEP INTO ADULTHOOD

There's another little Fynn story I wanted to share, because this one made me smile.

For years, while I was working with his family, Fynn's room was part of the household cleaning routine.

Then he finished school.
And that stopped.
Because somewhere along the line, kids grow up and looking after their own space becomes part of that transition too.

Fast-forward a little...
Fynn is now working full-time.
He's earning his own money.
His days look different.
His free time suddenly feels a whole lot more valuable.

And apparently he's reached another important milestone of adulthood:
He's personally recruited a cleaner 😂 yes of course me.
Not Mum.
Not Dad.
Fynn.
Has decided he'd like to hire me himself to help him stay on top of some of the things that chew through his time:
🧺 Laundry
🛏️ Bedding
🧹 His room
✨ General upkeep
🏠 And keeping his space functioning when life gets busy

Because becoming an adult isn't about proving you can personally do every single thing yourself.

Of course he can wash his clothes.
He can change his bedding.
He can clean his room.
That's not really the point.

Part of adulthood is also learning that your time has value.

You work.
You earn money.
You have responsibilities.
And eventually you start making decisions about which jobs you're going to spend your own time doing and which ones you're prepared to pay someone else to help with.

Sometimes your day off is better spent catching up on the chores.
And sometimes it's better spent seeing your mates, getting outside, resting, pursuing something you enjoy or simply having a day off.

If you've worked all week and decide that paying someone to take a couple of jobs off your plate is worth more to you than spending half your Saturday doing them?

Welcome to adulthood, mate. 😂

There's something particularly lovely about having once cleaned a kid's room as part of his family's home...
and years later having that same kid, now a young working adult, turns around and essentially say:
“Right. How much to keep doing it?” 😂

That's not failing to learn independence.

That's learning how to manage a life, a workload, a home and your resources.

And for someone who's watched him grow from a young teenager, it's another one of those little moments where I get to stand back and think:
Look at you go. 💚
First full-time work.
Now outsourcing.

Next he'll be complaining about electricity prices and getting excited when washing powder is half price 😂

😂 MIDWEEK FUNNY

THINGS THAT HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING THIS DIFFICULT — HOME EDITION

This week’s nomination:
Remembering the reusable shopping bags.

You own reusable shopping bags.
Lots of reusable shopping bags.
There are bags under the sink.
Bags in the pantry.
Bags inside other bags.
Possibly an entire bag whose sole purpose is storing the other bags.
You are absolutely prepared for grocery shopping.

Except for one minor detail:
The bags are at home.
You are at the supermarket. 😂
And you even remembered them while writing the shopping list.
While putting your shoes on.
While walking toward the front door.
Possibly even while getting into the car.

Then somewhere between turning the key and arriving at the shops, that information simply left the building and left unactioned.

So you stand at the checkout faced with the traditional reusable-bag dilemma:
Buy another bag?
Attempt to carry $147 worth of groceries individually?

Or confidently announce:
“Nah, I’ve got bags in the car.”
You do not have bags in the car.
You have 37 bags at home. 😂

And this is why home systems exist.
Because sometimes the solution isn't owning the thing.
It's putting the thing where you'll actually need the thing.
Car.
Handbag.
Front door.
Anywhere except beautifully organised under the kitchen sink while you're standing in Woolies.

Unofficial statistics suggest the average Australian household owns enough reusable shopping bags to open a small bag shop.

Statistic completely made up.

Buying another reusable bag because I forgot my reusable bags:
the system is currently experiencing technical difficulties. 😂

🧼 CLEANER CONFESSIONS — SOMETHING NEW IN THE MOP BUCKET

OFF-THE-SHELF FLOOR CLEANER: LET’S SEE HOW IT GOES. 👀

And we're back! 😂

Today is our first day back in business, and apparently we've returned at exactly that time of year when everything starts happening at once.

🌿 Spring cleaning is well and truly underway.
🎄 Christmas is approaching at a frankly alarming pace.
📅 The end-of-year roster is being organised.
🧹 And we're straight back into busy homes, busy households and busy schedules.

So naturally, what better time to continue a little cleaning experiment we started before our break.

If you see me/us filling the mop bucket and think…

“Hang on… that’s not what she normally uses.”

Correct. 😂
We are trialling some new off the shelf brands.

Normally, for general floor cleaning in clients’ homes, I use a commercial disinfectant and degreaser floor cleaner.

On my own household grocery list, though, my usual easy off-the-shelf buy is the green Handy Andy 2 in 1 Cleaner & Disinfectant.

It’s one of those products I know, grab and get on with the job because I have work boots, yard/farm boots, inside outside dog and children where my floors always need a product to lift the dirt and grim.

But rather than reviewing something I already know and use, we thought wd’d deliberately choose some different and start working our way through some of the readily available cleaning products you can actually walk into Bunnings, the supermarket or another everyday shop and buy yourself.

First cab off the rank:
Selleys Complete Clean Multi Surface Floor Cleaner — Pine.

I started using it in homes the week before our closure, I'm using it again this week, and I'll continue trialling it throughout October alongside some others.

Because I don’t think you can properly judge a floor cleaner from one mop of one floor.

Different homes.
Different flooring.
Different levels of foot traffic.
Kids.
Pets.
Different kinds of dirt and marks.

That’s where you actually find out how something performs.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS?

On application, it’s doing the job.

It’s lifting visible dirt and marks well, and the mop water is certainly providing the evidence. 😂

So far, I have no complaints about its actual cleaning performance.

But that’s only half of what I’m interested in.

I want to know what happens after I leave and the floor completely dries.

Does it dry nicely?
Any streaking?
Any residue?
How does the floor feel underfoot?
Does the finish still look good later in the day?

And most importantly…

Do YOU notice any difference compared with what I normally use?

This is where my regular clients get to become part of the experiment. 😂

Your feedback is as alwats VERY welcome, either directly when we communicate or in the comments thats entirely up to you.

Good, bad or completely indifferent.

And if you notice absolutely no difference?

That’s useful feedback too.

Because I’m not interested in reviewing cleaning products by reading the front of the bottle and telling you what the manufacturer says it does.

I want to know what it actually does in real homes.

I’ll keep putting this one through its paces during October and then report back with my verdict.

We’ll keep doing this with some other readily available supermarket and hardware-store cleaning products too.

Eventually we might even put a few head-to-head:

Commercial floor cleaner
VS
my trusty green Handy Andy
VS
whatever off-the-shelf contender is currently getting dragged around Brisbane in my cleaning kit. 😂

Because sometimes the commercial product wins.

Sometimes the readily available product does the job perfectly well too.

And sometimes you discover something you weren’t expecting to like.

That’s the whole point of actually testing them.

The products people walk past on the shelf and wonder:

“IS THAT ANY GOOD?” 😂

Well…

we’ll find out.

And with spring cleaning underway and Christmas rapidly heading in our direction, there is no shortage of real homes to test them in 😂🧹

🧠 MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY
And the last of my holiday fun as we are back tomorrow. For this experiement I’m choosing #3😂

I saw one of those Facebook posts today:
“Choose the woman who looks the oldest. Your choice reveals a hidden truth about you.”

I picked #3.

Not because of her hair, clothes or whether I actually thought she looked older.

It was the posture.

She’s leaning back.
Arm over the chair.
Legs crossed.
Comfortable.

To me she looked like a woman who was thinking:

“Are we finished here? Because I’ve got things to do.” 😂

And it got me thinking…

Maybe one of the healthier parts of getting older isn’t becoming less tolerant.

Maybe it’s becoming more selective about what deserves our energy.

You start learning the difference between being kind and constantly accommodating people.

Between explaining yourself and feeling like you have to justify yourself.

Between helping someone and carrying something that was never yours to carry.

Between keeping the peace and sacrificing your own peace to do it.

Psychology can’t tell us someone’s age or personality from a silhouette and those Facebook “personality tests” are mostly a bit of fun.

But sometimes our interpretation of something tells us more than the answer itself.

And apparently my interpretation of #3 was:

She’s comfortable. She’s confident. She doesn't need to perform for anybody. And if this meeting could have been an email, she’s leaving. 😂

Maybe that’s not getting grumpy with age.

Maybe that’s learning that our time, energy and mental health have value.

And that’s something I’m quite happy to get older into. 🧡

🌱 THE HAILZ GARDEN — COUNTRY LIFE IN THE CITY

APPARENTLY, IF THERE'S A PATCH OF DIRT, I'LL FIND SOMETHING TO GROW IN IT. 😂

A little wander around the garden this morning, and apparently things are getting a bit out of hand again.

Not that I'm complaining. 😂

Four fresh eggs from the girls, a basket of freshly cut lemongrass and a whole lot of things growing wherever I've managed to squeeze them in.

And that's exactly how I like it.

🌵 THE DRAGON FRUIT
A cutting that's decided it rather likes its new home 👏
Now I'm watching to see just how much space it's planning to claim. Because apparently I needed another plant that wants to climb over everything. 😂

🌾 THE LEMONGRASS
Freshly cut and ready to use!
Another one of those plants I love having in the garden. It grows beautifully in Brisbane's warmer weather, smells fantastic and is handy to have growing right outside the kitchen.
And apparently, the chickens aren't the only ones contributing to today's harvest.

🌿 THE CELERY
Growing from kitchen scraps!
One of my favourite things about gardening is seeing just how much you can grow from things that would otherwise end up in the compost.
Sometimes all you need is the bottom of a vegetable, a little water, some soil and a bit of patience.

🍅 THE EXPERIMENTAL TOMATO
I've been testing a new growing area, and this tomato is absolutely loving it.
This is why I enjoy experimenting with different spots around the garden.
Sometimes you can plan everything perfectly, and sometimes a plant simply decides where it wants to be.

🌱 THE MINT
I know people complain about mint taking over.
Personally, I LOVE IT. 😂
The more it spreads, the happier I am. Plenty to pick, plenty to use and plenty to share.

🌿 THE BASIL
Apparently, it's taken responsibility for its own propagation.
It flowers, drops seeds and pops up wherever it feels like growing.
At this point, I'm just providing the accommodation. 😂

🥬 THE LITTLE SCATTER GARDEN
This little patch might not look particularly impressive from a distance, but it's been surprisingly productive.

Plenty of radishes harvested, different things popping up together and a mixture of edible plants all competing for their little bit of sunshine.

It's proof that you don't need an enormous, perfectly organised vegetable garden to grow something useful.

🌱 THE VEGEPOD
Another productive little corner of the garden.
Different growing conditions, another opportunity to experiment and more fresh vegetables to bring into the kitchen. In winter it houses greens for the chickens due to the lack of sun exposure, whereas Oct-April it grows mostly lettuce and other delicate greens the possums generally attack before we xan get to them.
I'm always interested in seeing which plants prefer the raised growing environment and which are happier scattered throughout and can survive the garden.

🍌 THE BANANAS & MULBERRIES
And then there are the bigger producers.
Our plentiful bananas, which seem determined to turn the backyard into an actual jungle, and the mulberries that give us another reason to wander outside and see what's ready to pick.

Between the fruit trees, vegetables, herbs and chickens, there's usually something happening out here.

🐔 AND THEN THERE ARE THE GIRLS...
Four fresh eggs in the basket this morning.
Not a bad little contribution from the feathered members of the household.
Of course, they also contribute plenty of manure, entertainment and unsolicited assistance with absolutely every gardening project. 😂

REAL GARDENS. REAL FOOD. REAL LIFE.

My garden isn't particularly interested in being perfectly landscaped.

It's a collection of experiments, recycled materials, cuttings, kitchen scraps, self-seeding plants, established fruit trees and whatever else I've decided to try growing this week.

Some things thrive. Some don't. Some surprise me completely.

And some, like the mint and basil, apparently don't need my assistance at all.

I love being able to wander outside, collect a few eggs, cut some fresh lemongrass, pick some herbs, harvest whatever's ready and bring it all back into the kitchen.

It's not about being completely self-sufficient.

It's about growing what we can, using what we've got, reducing waste and enjoying the process.

And apparently, despite having an entire garden full of plants, I still keep finding somewhere to squeeze in another one.

The garden is productive. The gardener has absolutely no intention of stopping 😂🌱

Well, that's almost another school-holiday break done and dusted!

Hailz Rain & Shine is back on the road from Tuesday 6 October, and we're heading straight into one of our busiest times of the year.

Spring cleaning is well underway, Christmas bookings are being organised, January servicing is already being planned, and apparently the end of the year is approaching at an alarming speed. 😂🎄

📅 DECEMBER & JANUARY BOOKINGS ARE NOW BEING SCHEDULED!

I've already spoken with many of our regular clients about their Christmas plans, holiday absences and summer servicing requirements.

I'm currently working through the rosters, juggling everyone's holiday dates, our team's availability and the different servicing arrangements needed over the school holidays.

If I haven't been back in touch yet, I will be very soon! 💚

As I finalise the roster, I'll be contacting clients to confirm their upcoming dates and any changes to their usual arrangements.

🌿 SPRING CLEANS, REGULAR SERVICES & CASUAL AVAILABILITY

We're also right in the middle of spring-cleaning season!

Our regular roster is already very busy, and the limited casual cleaning appointments we open up tend to disappear quickly.

Others have completely different routines during the school holidays.

Some prefer regular maintenance, while others simply want help with the bigger jobs every so often.

That's why we offer several different servicing arrangements:

🧹 Continual fortnightly — regular fortnightly servicing throughout the year.

🧹 School-term servicing — for households that prefer to pause or adjust services around school holidays.

From Thursday 31 December through to Wednesday 27 January, we'll be operating on a minimal, advance-booking-only roster.

For some households, this creates a natural break while families are travelling or the kids are home.

For others, it's exactly when they need additional support to keep everything ticking over.

🌿 SEASONAL LIVING THURSDAY
APPARENTLY THE JUNGLE NEEDS FEEDING TOO! 🪴😂

Following on from Tuesday’s post, I’ve started trialling two new indoor plant products, so today I thought we’d document a few BEFORE photos.

Because there’s no point telling you in six months that something works if we haven’t got the photos to compare it with!

And considering the number of plants I’ve managed to squeeze into this house, there’s certainly no shortage of willing test subjects. 😂

🌱 PHOTO 1 — THE HANGING JUNGLE
A few of my hanging plants scattered throughout the kitchen and living areas.

Different varieties.
Different positions.
Different amounts of natural light.

Some are thriving, some are still finding their feet, and some are wanting to quietly take over the ceiling.

And no, these aren't all of them 😂

🪴 PHOTO 2 — A FEW MORE FROM AROUND THE HOUSE
A little selection of the plants living on cupboards, shelves, benches and wherever else I’ve managed to find a spare spot.

Including my rather substantial Zanzibar Gem!

Again, these are only a handful of the collection. There are far too many to photograph individually.

And after playing around with AI images of my house, I've apparently discovered there's room for SO MANY MORE plants.

Clearly, I didn't need that encouragement 😂

🌿 SO, WHAT AM I TESTING?
On Tuesday, I started using two products from Bunnings:
🟢 Maxicrop Indoor Plant Food
A liquid plant food that makes up to 90 litres from a 250 mL bottle.
🟢 Osmocote Indoor Plant Fertiliser Tablets
Controlled-release fertiliser tablets designed to feed indoor plants gradually for up to six months.

Now we'll see how they perform in my little indoor jungle.

📸 THE SIX-MONTH EXPERIMENT
These are our starting photos.

Over the coming months, I'll be keeping an eye on:
🌱 New growth and new leaves.
🌿 Leaf colour and overall foliage.
🪴 General plant health and development.
☀️ How plants in different positions respond.

Of course, watering, natural light, temperature and the changing seasons all influence plant growth too.

This isn't a scientific experiment. It's a real-life product trial in a very real, increasingly overcrowded house 😂

In approximately six months, we'll photograph these same plants again and compare the results.

I'll share what I've noticed, how the products performed and whether I think they're worth buying again.

AND SIX MONTHS FROM NOW…

😂 MIDWEEK FUNNY — APPARENTLY IT’S NOT JUST ME…

A little more holiday fun, so on Monday I shared what happened when I asked AI to send me back to 1985.

And after discovering that apparently all I needed was some extra hairspray and AI basically considered the job done...

I thought:
Right. Let's try the house. 😂

It's school holidays. I'm technically off work. Apparently this is what happens when I have time to use my tech time for completely unnecessary experiments.

So I asked AI to take my home back in time too and because im always in others home welcome inside mine.

Surely we'd get a dramatic transformation?

Nope.

Warm timber.
Mid-century furniture.
Plants bloody everywhere.
Burnt orange.
Records and music.
Art all over the walls.
Retro lamps.
Vintage cabinets.
Patterns.
Colour.
More plants.

I stared at the results and thought...

Hang on. That's basically my house. 😂

Apparently AI didn't take my home back in time.

It just gave me more decorating ideas.

Because I already have the cabinets.
I already have several lamps.
I already have the records, art, plants, colour and general retro obsession.

But apparently what my lounge is currently missing is...

a disco ball and some dance lighting. 🪩😂

Although, to be fair, the dining/kitchen already has dance lighting, because apparently that's a completely normal thing for a household to have. 😂

And obviously...

there is DEFINITELY room for more plants. 🌿

There is always room for more plants.

So after this week's highly scientific holiday research, we've established:

AI sent me to 1985.
Barely changed me.

AI sent my house back in time.
Barely changed that either.

At this point I think we can safely conclude...

I'M DEFINITELY A VINTAGE & RETRO GAL. 😂

Although there are limits.

I'll happily take the furniture, records, colour, plants, big hair and questionable fashion choices.

I'm keeping the Wi-Fi, cordless vacuum, dryer and other mod cons.

I'm retro but I'm not stupid. 😂
