Rinsing a frypan in the kitchen sink might seem harmless, but just because oils and fats wash down the drain as a liquid, doesn’t mean they stay that way.

The hot liquid cools and solidifies as it travels through the wastewater network, catching things like wet wipes and cotton balls, and sticking to the sides of our pipes.

That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to think at the sink, especially during the colder months when the meals are hot and the pipes are cold!

We transport and treat the wastewater from sinks, drains and toilets right across our service region, but with everyone’s help, we can avoid costly blockages through every season.

Tap to read our new comic, Rise of the Fatberg, to learn more about how our 24/7 crews clear blockages from the wastewater network.

Steve is our “eyes and ears” in our 24/7 Operations Hub, monitoring our network for water outages, low pressure flows or traffic disruptions that might interrupt our customers’ day.

Our Ops team may not be visible to our community but they play an important role in helping our crews on-the-ground have the right information so they can fix bursts and blockages so our customers can get on with their day.

We asked Steve what the Ops team are doing when there’s a water burst. Here’s what Steve had to say:

Hot off the press! 📰Tales Behind the Tap is out now! Bursts and blockages beware.💥

‘Rise of the Fatberg’, the first in our comic series, tells the story of what ‘feeds the fatberg’ and how we can defeat this common challenge together.

Did you know that in 2025 alone, fats, wet wipes and other non-flushable nasties accounted for almost a third of blockages in our wastewater network?

Head to our website now to dive in and stay tuned for more coming soon.👀
