Finally able to put this into words

so city of Perth titles was a roller coaster of emotions for us,

Thursday practice was a good day the track was fast we dropped a few tenths and we set our PB, still not quite as fast as the front runners but close enough.

Friday practice, wet track to start with and Preston felt good in the wet and was fast, then it dried out and the rubber was gone, then we sucked, we struggled so bad we left the track thinking we weren’t comming back to race the event, we were over half a second off the pace and I wasn’t going to come back and run in the mid pack and potentially end up just getting beat up n bust up the kart for no reason, we went home re grouped and ended up turning up for Saturday qualifying with one goal to make the shootout.

Saturday, wet qualifying and Preston was happy we only managed to qualify 3rd due to getting caught up with lap traffic on a flying lap but that was ok we were in! The shootout rolls around and the track is drying so having qualified on wets and we didn’t scrub our tyres in we had to run green slicks on a drying track, all of the cadet 9 shoot out drivers drove unbelievable in the conditions, pushing the level of grip under pressure, Preston managed to hold onto to 3rd so we were out of 3rd for heat 1.

Heat 1 was unbelievable Preston got to the lead and had a considerable gap but ended up giving up the lead, he managed to make a pass on the 2nd last corner of the last lap for the win! Seeing all his mates get around him after the interview on Kart Chaser was as good as the win!

Heat 2 he was on again he lead lap 1 then got over taken and made a mistake and fell back to 5th but caught back up to take P2 again just went to another level

Heat 3 we were out of the dreaded P2 on the out side and managed to lead lap 1 a few battles seen him falling back to 4th and the front 2 get away but managed to finish 3rd in all these heats he was right on the front running pace.

The final, starting off the front row out of P2 again he gets tuned around in the first corner, I was absolutely guttered for him I just wanted to walk away but couldn’t leave as I knew he would try his heart out, 18 karts were left out of the 21 after the incident and he made his way up to 8th but the damage from the hit in turn 1 kicked in (loose axel) and he dropped back to 10th.

Not how we wanted it to end we just wanted to finish were he deserved weather that was on the podium or not that’s all we wanted, it’s not easy doing the bitumen part time, the front runners are elite and turn a lot more laps on the black top than us and to try and turn up and run at the front is not easy, super proud of his effort.

Ok we’re back, we need to catch everyone up on where we have been and how out last few races went.
Following our WA dirt kart title we headed to Geraldton for the Bitumen state title at the Midwest Kart Club we had an ok outing finishing 6th overall for the weekend. Having switched our focus back to dirt We just lacked the last couple of tenths to be in contention so we were content with the result.

After Geraldton we had to be in SA on the Thursday for the Australian Dirt Kart Titles at Loxton Kart Club so after racing on the Sunday we travelled back down to Perth a lazy 5 hrs decided we hadn’t driven enough so we picked up Grace and Ivy swapped out karts and drove another 4 hrs out to southern cross, camped over night then drove another 16hrs the following day and camped at the Nullarbor rd house woke up and drove another 13hrs to arrive at Loxton, straight to the car wash! 😂

Our main goal for the weekend was to make the final on Sunday as Jr Lights had 39 entries and only the top 20 make the final, despite having a good draw we just didn’t pass enough karts throughout the heat races and didn’t convert our front row start, although we did have some strong finishes we only had 6 lap heats on a 360m track so it was hard to get much done, throw in some poor decision making by me with chassis set up and engine tuning we ended up qualifying 13th for Sunday, after the 8 lap final we finishing 12th, again very few laps (8) it was hard to get much done definitely think the amount of laps for an Australian title on a short track should be more.

On day 1 Preston had a nervous start to the Wa dirt kart title giving up the lead in heat 1 and struggling to get the job done in heat 2 finishing 4th
Day 2 he was back but unfortunately he got binned in heat 3 and suffered a DNF heat 4 he finished strongly in 1st position then a 3rd to finish out the day
Day 3 with only 1 race remaining he finished 2nd behind the current Australian champ.
So after all of that we managed to finish 4th overall, plenty of could have should have would have but we were proud he bounced back after what happened.

While we have been quiet on FB we have still been racing, we made a return to the black top a couple of weekends ago, we had been out of that kart for around 2 months and it showed. We had the club day on the 9th on a layout and direction we had not ran beforehand it took a couple of sessions to get back into it and used to the track. We missed out on the podium due to equal points then going to a count back to qualifying, so 4th overall it was not to bad for so long out and no practice. Last weekend we were in Geraldton for the first time for the state round and the rustiness followed us there as well, we didn’t get to post a lap time in quali due to binning it on the opening lap it was all up hill or should I say “up in the air” from there Preston battled back from 19th to 11th in heat 1 and I think 11th to 7th in heat 2 then contact from behind in the Saturday final seen the biggest incident we have been involved in and was right in front of me on the track. He managed to get the kart going and made his way back through the field from last to 8tb with a bent kart and busted rim, Sunday wasn’t much better result wise. We’ll be back on the dirt tomorrow for our last outing till states.

Belated race recap, we had some bad luck in heat 3 avoiding a crash seen us DNF but not a bad hit out, struggled for pace in heat 1 but dialled it in for heat 2 and 4.

Tough day at the office yesterday, an issue with our entry had us starting off the back row all day, a mistake and a racing incident in front had us with 2 DNF’s from 2 starts! Then the show started.
Can’t wait to hit the road to Wagin this weekend.
