Fastjet Zimbabwe on Sunday launched its inaugural airbus on the Johannesburg-Victoria Falls route when an A320 Airbus landed with 151 passengers, adding the airline's commitment to connectivity of the tourism destination.
The scheduled route targets to service the peak August and September period.
Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon Tongai Mnangagwa officiated at the welcome ceremony which had Transport Ministry officials, Airports Company of Zimbabwe, the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Matabeleland North office, City of Victoria Falls and other Government departments.
Victoria Falls International Airport, upgraded in 2016, can handle wide bodied aircraft and receives more than 10 airlines that use the facility mostly to South Africa and the region.
This enhances connectivity into the world tourism destination of choice, home to one of the World's Natural Wonder and Unesco Heritage Site.
The welcome ceremony for the 168-seater airbus was characterised by a water canyon salute, music and dance.
Hon Mnangagwa said tourism now contributes over 10 percent to the national economy, making the sector key.
He said arrivals and receipts continue growing as confidence in Victoria Falls and the country continues on the positive.
A representative from the Ministry of Transport Mr Takura Vengesa said Government continues to liberalise the air space through the Open Skies Policy among other policy interventions.
Fasjet chief executive Mr Farai Mtangadura however appealed for protection of local aviation players as he pledged continued servicing of local and regional routes by the airliner.
