💧 NWSC Hosts Water Quality Management and Water Treatment Optimisation Training

Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWSC) yesterday successfully concluded hosting a five-day training programme on Water Quality Management and Water Treatment Plant Optimisation for Plant Operators, Plant Supervisors and Laboratory Assurance Officers from Cluster 1 commercial utilities comprising Nkana Water, Kafubu Water, Mulonga Water and Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Companies.

The training brought together frontline personnel responsible for water treatment operations to strengthen their knowledge and practical skills in water quality management, water treatment plant optimisation and the use of early warning systems for effective raw water quality monitoring. Through a combination of classroom sessions and practical simulation exercises, participants enhanced their competencies in water treatment processes, process control, and operational efficiency to support the consistent production of safe drinking water.

Officially opening the training earlier this week, NWSC Managing Director, Eng. Dr. Steven Mwale, underscored the important role played by plant operators in protecting public health.

"Plant operators are frontline custodians of water quality and play a vital role in safeguarding public health. The decisions you make every day in the operation and monitoring of our treatment plants directly impact the safety and well-being of the communities we serve. I encourage you to fully utilise this opportunity to learn, share experiences, and acquire practical skills that will strengthen water quality management and improve service delivery across our utilities."

Throughout the programme, participants received practical training in the use of specialised water quality monitoring equipment, including multi-meters, jar testing equipment, digital chlorine meters and turbidity meters. The sessions also focused on optimising treatment processes through improved chemical dosing, strengthened process control and enhanced operational efficiency.

Speaking during the training, UNICEF WASH Officer, Bwalya Nachula, reaffirmed UNICEF's commitment to supporting the water sector through continued capacity building.

"UNICEF remains committed to strengthening the capacities of frontline personnel within Commercial Utilities to support the implementation of sector efficiency and sustainability reforms. Frontline operators are key to the provision of safe water to communities, which is why training programmes such as this, tailored to improving staff competencies, are so important." She said.

Beyond strengthening individual skills, the training contributes to improving institutional capacity across Zambia's commercial water utilities by promoting best practices in water treatment, enhancing water quality surveillance, encouraging data-driven decision-making and supporting more efficient and sustainable utility operations.

The training was conducted under the Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Programme, implemented by the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, the National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) and UNICEF, with financial support from the German Development Bank (KfW) on behalf of the German Government.

NWSC was honoured to host this important training and remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote knowledge sharing, strengthen technical capacity and contribute to the delivery of safe, reliable and sustainable water services for the communities we serve.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW BULANGILILO SUPPLY LINE UNDERGOES TESTING

Kitwe, 22nd July 2026 – Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWSC) wishes to inform its valued customers that water supply to Chimwemwe and surrounding areas is being enhanced through the ongoing testing of the new Bulangililo Water Treatment Plant and its transmission system ahead of its official commissioning.

During the testing programme, the new system is delivering approximately 38 million litres of water per day to the Chimwemwe Distribution Centre, compared to a maximum of 20 million litres per day under the previous system.

This significant increase is expected to improve the reliability of water supply to customers across Chimwemwe and surrounding communities while confirming that the new infrastructure is performing as intended before it is officially commissioned.

NWSC Managing Director Eng. Dr. Steven Mwale said the encouraging results from the testing programme demonstrates the potential of the investment to significantly improve water supply in the area.

The testing phase is already demonstrating the transformative impact this investment will have on water supply in Chimwemwe.

Our focus is to thoroughly assess the performance of the new system before its official commissioning while ensuring that customers begin to experience the benefits of the increased water volumes.

"We appreciate the continued patience and cooperation of our customers as we complete this important milestone".He said
Eng Mwale stressed that to allow the testing programme to continue without interruption, the planned shutdown of the Chimwemwe Distribution Centre and the repair of a defective valve on the elevated tank discharge line, which had been scheduled for Wednesday, 22nd July 2026, has been rescheduled. A new date for the works will be communicated in due course.

He added that the valve repair remains an important part of the overall improvement programme and will enhance regulation of water flows from the elevated storage tank, improve its filling rate and support more efficient and reliable water distribution across the network.

Meanwhile, NWSC's Operations Team will continue optimising the distribution network to ensure that the increased water reaching the Chimwemwe Distribution Centre translates into improved supply, particularly to areas that have historically experienced low pressure or intermittent water service.

The Company further appeals to customers to promptly report water leakages, illegal connections and acts of vandalism, which continue to affect efficient water distribution. Protecting the water supply network is a shared responsibility and is essential to ensuring that the full benefits of this significant Government investment are realised by all residents.

NWSC thanks its customers for their patience, cooperation and continued support as the testing programme progresses
