💧 NWSC Hosts Water Quality Management and Water Treatment Optimisation Training
Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWSC) yesterday successfully concluded hosting a five-day training programme on Water Quality Management and Water Treatment Plant Optimisation for Plant Operators, Plant Supervisors and Laboratory Assurance Officers from Cluster 1 commercial utilities comprising Nkana Water, Kafubu Water, Mulonga Water and Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Companies.
The training brought together frontline personnel responsible for water treatment operations to strengthen their knowledge and practical skills in water quality management, water treatment plant optimisation and the use of early warning systems for effective raw water quality monitoring. Through a combination of classroom sessions and practical simulation exercises, participants enhanced their competencies in water treatment processes, process control, and operational efficiency to support the consistent production of safe drinking water.
Officially opening the training earlier this week, NWSC Managing Director, Eng. Dr. Steven Mwale, underscored the important role played by plant operators in protecting public health.
"Plant operators are frontline custodians of water quality and play a vital role in safeguarding public health. The decisions you make every day in the operation and monitoring of our treatment plants directly impact the safety and well-being of the communities we serve. I encourage you to fully utilise this opportunity to learn, share experiences, and acquire practical skills that will strengthen water quality management and improve service delivery across our utilities."
Throughout the programme, participants received practical training in the use of specialised water quality monitoring equipment, including multi-meters, jar testing equipment, digital chlorine meters and turbidity meters. The sessions also focused on optimising treatment processes through improved chemical dosing, strengthened process control and enhanced operational efficiency.
Speaking during the training, UNICEF WASH Officer, Bwalya Nachula, reaffirmed UNICEF's commitment to supporting the water sector through continued capacity building.
"UNICEF remains committed to strengthening the capacities of frontline personnel within Commercial Utilities to support the implementation of sector efficiency and sustainability reforms. Frontline operators are key to the provision of safe water to communities, which is why training programmes such as this, tailored to improving staff competencies, are so important." She said.
Beyond strengthening individual skills, the training contributes to improving institutional capacity across Zambia's commercial water utilities by promoting best practices in water treatment, enhancing water quality surveillance, encouraging data-driven decision-making and supporting more efficient and sustainable utility operations.
The training was conducted under the Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Programme, implemented by the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, the National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) and UNICEF, with financial support from the German Development Bank (KfW) on behalf of the German Government.
NWSC was honoured to host this important training and remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote knowledge sharing, strengthen technical capacity and contribute to the delivery of safe, reliable and sustainable water services for the communities we serve.
