Beyond the Pipes: Turning Water Infrastructure into Better Services

Water infrastructure is not just about pipes, boreholes and storage tanks. It is about making a real difference in people’s daily lives.

On 24 September 2026, the second PWASHE meeting was held in Eastern Province, bringing together stakeholders in the water, sanitation and development sector.

Representing Eastern Water and Sanitation Company Limited (EWSC), Director Engineering, Eng. December Banda, shared an update on water infrastructure projects underway in Chipata, highlighting progress and the expected benefits for communities.

The Chipata Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project has reached 37% physical progress, with about 29 kilometres of pipeline installed.

The project is expected to improve water services for approximately 160,000 people.

EWSC is also implementing CDF-funded projects in Magazine, Mchini and Chimwemwe, including boreholes, storage facilities, pipelines and public water kiosks.

EWSC appreciates the continued collaboration of PWASHE stakeholders, including World Vision Zambia, Living water international, Innovation Africa , Unicef Zambia, Mary's Meals, GIZ Zambia and others.

EWSC Joins Call for Greater Inclusion of the Deaf Community

Eastern Water and Sanitation Company Limited (EWSC) joined stakeholders in commemorating the International Day of Sign Languages during Deaf Awareness Week, held from 20 to 29 September, under the theme “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights,” at Magwero Boarding School for the Deaf


The event brought together stakeholders to raise awareness of the rights, abilities and contributions of persons who are deaf, while highlighting the importance of removing barriers that limit their full participation in society.

Speaking at the event, the Head Teacher, Mr Zachariah Manda emphasised that deaf people have the same dignity and fundamental human rights as everyone else.

Mr Manda also stressed that equal opportunities should be provided to deaf people, noting that deafness does not limit an individual’s productivity.

Further, Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) called for the protection and promotion of sign language, while emphasising the need to raise awareness about the deaf community and strengthen efforts towards an inclusive society.

Representing the Provincial Permanent Secretary, Mr Paul Thole, Chief Human Resource Officer, Mr Nation Lusale, highlighted the importance of ensuring inclusivity for all citizens and creating an environment where everyone can participate and contribute meaningfully.

For EWSC, participation in the event reaffirmed the importance of inclusive communication and equitable access to services.

As a public service provider, the Company recognises that effective communication means ensuring that information and services are accessible to all customers, including persons with disabilities.

EWSC remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote dignity, equality and meaningful participation for all members of society.
