THE MYTH OF BEING "TOO BUSY": HOW TO BALANCE ACADEMICS AND ENTERPRISE
Earlier today, I shared a video of an interaction I had with a student who wanted to know how I balanced a bachelor’s degree in accountancy, professional board exams, and running a business in my early 20s.
Her concern was valid: "How do I keep my academics on point to graduate with a distinction while simultaneously building a business?"
To answer her, I didn’t give a lecture. I simply asked her to break down her previous day. She had no classes because they were canceled, studied for an hour, read a book for two hours, and the rest of the 24-hour day simply vanished into thin air.
This isn't just her story, it is the story of nearly every student and young professional in Zambia today. Whether you are at ZICAS, UNZA, CBU, or UNILUS, the pattern is the same. The day passes by, you are exhausted, but you can’t point to a single productive asset you built.
Here is the radical truth about balancing school and business:
1.) The Free Time Exists: There is more than enough time in a student’s schedule to achieve a distinction and still build a startup. The global giants we look up to today, from tech founders to industrial block builders, started in their dorm rooms while balancing exams.
2.) The Social Media Trap: We claim we are "too busy," but if you check your phone’s screen-time settings, you are spending 4 to 6 hours on endless scrolling, gossip, and monitoring who did what. You are highly updated on useless drama, but completely broke on ex*****on.
3.) Radical Re-positioning: If you are going to use social media, turn it into an asset. Consume progressive content. Watch tutorials that sharpen your coding, your accounting, or your sales skills.
Stop using school or your job as an excuse for why your business idea is stuck. You have the time; you just lack the discipline to structure it. Cut out the noise, audit your hours, and start building your empire in your spare time.
Let’s be completely honest in the comments below: If you checked your phone's screen-time right now, how many hours did you spend on social media today versus working on your goals? 👇
