Swimming Pool Sand Filters

Filters come in all different shapes, sizes and contain many different kinds of filter media (material used for filtering).

The most common filter in the South African household, is the Sand Filter.
A Sand filter uses silica sand to remove any debris from the water that passes through it. As seen in the attached images, the water flows from the top of the filter, through the sand, to the bottom where the "fingers" are located.

Often times pool owners choose cheaper filter options, not expecting much of a difference compared to a more expensive filter. However, the rule of "goedkoop is duurkoop" remains true. Cheaper filters often come with parts that are not designed to stand the test of time. From weak finger design, to through tank fittings that bend or don't seal. These seemingly small breakages cost a lot when it comes to repairing them afterward.

As an example. The white through tank fittings in the images have a difference. The one shown at the top, have no ribs on the inside. This small difference cost our client over R1000 in repairs, due to the filter having to be rebuilt to change the fitting safely, without breaking anything else.

We always suggest having your sand changes done by professionals, or doing your due research towards the process, before attempting it.
A filter becomes very sensitive when it has no sand in it.

Suggested brands of filters, by PoolTech are: Quality and Speck brand filters.

Water chemistry.

This week we are dedicating time to educate you about pool chemistry.

Clear water in a swimming pool does not always mean clean water.
Pool owners are often stumped when it comes to getting a green pool clear, because of pH Levels. High or low pH levels prevent the chlorine in your water from doing its job.
If our pH Levels are low, it is considered Acidic. We will often find that Fiberglass pools tend to be naturally acidic. You will see evidence of this in your pool's mosaic line. Over time the mosaic line becomes faded. Not because of the sun damage, but because of acidic water. The acidic water also weakens glue points in your plumbing, causing unnecessary, underground leaks.
Acidic pools also do damage to your skin, especially the skin of young children

If our pH level is high, we have an alkali heavy pool. This is common in our Marbelite lined pools (rough cement surface pools). Acid is used to treat this, but just be careful to not overdose the pool with acid.
Always refer to the back of your chemical bottles to know what to add, and how much of it to add.

Lastly, invest in chemical testing strips, or drops. They end up saving you a lot in the long run.

The first post in our Swimming Pool Education Series. This will be a series where we help our viewers, clients and general public understand a little bit more about what is going on with their swimming pool systems.

This week we start with the Salt Chlorinators.

The Chlorinating electrodes in the images below, have a problem. Can you guess what it is?
The white buildup visible is calcium buildup. White crystal structures form on your electrodes and cover up the electrode's plates. This prevents the chlorinator from turning the salt into chlorine to sanitize your swimming pool water.

Some chlorinator cells are see-through. This makes it easy to view within the cell and see if it needs any cleaning done. During normal usage throughout the year, we suggest that the electrode is removed and cleaned out with a 50/50 Acid and Water mixture.
Some units such as the Pentair inline chlorinator make it impossible to see the electrodes. The unit will ask you to add salt, however it won't turn the salt light off, due to the real problem being the calcium buildup.

The more you know.
