The pool is ready. The paving isn't.

The water is clear and blue. The brick paving around it is dark and patchy, and from a few steps away it looks worn out.

It isn't. That's not old brick, that's dirt, and it washes off. A 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵 lifts the dirt out of the brick and the joints, and the brown water running off the paving in the reel is exactly that.

Same paving. Same pool. By the end it is light, clean brick right up to the water's edge. 🏊

Those chairs aren't worn out. They're dirty. 🪑

From across the room, worn and dirty look the same. They are two different problems.

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗻 is torn or thinning fabric, bald edges, or foam that has gone flat under you. 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘆 is a colour that has gone dull and a weave that feels flat and a little rough, because dust and everyday grime have worked their way down into the fabric.

A clean can't mend a tear. Dull is a different story.

On this job, two grey fabric chairs and a grey couch were cleaned outside on the paving with an 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹. One thin line feeds cleaning solution into the weave, and the thick suction hose draws it out again with the grime in it, so the dirt leaves with the hose instead of staying in the seat.

A stained couch is not a finished couch. 🛋️

White fabric takes everything: coffee, kids, the dog. The marks build up until the whole couch looks tired, and most people start pricing a new one. But if the frame is solid and the fabric is not torn, the marks are sitting in the fabric, and that is a 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝗯 before it is a shopping trip.

Here is how we do it, 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲:
The fabric is brushed to loosen what has settled into it.
The machine's wand works deep into the fabric and draws the dirt back out.

A photo first lets us see the fabric and the marks before we quote, so you know where you stand.

Rats and mice in the garage are an outside problem. 🐀

They come in from outside, and rats and mice run along walls instead of crossing open ground. So rodent control starts 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹, on the path they already use.

Here is what goes in:
The bait blocks slide onto a rod inside the station.
The lid closes and the station is locked with a key.
It sits tight against the outside wall, right where they run.

Rats and mice walk in through the entry hole on the end of the station to get to the bait. The lid is 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱, so kids and pets cannot get to it, and the bait stays out on the perimeter, not loose on the garage floor.

Three contractors on one renovation means three sets of excuses when something goes wrong. 🔨

This walk-around is all one house. First stop, a 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 getting its outside walls plastered. Round the back, a 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 going on over the patio. Then inside, where the ceiling boards are going up.

Walls, roof and ceilings, all run by one company. You deal with one set of people from the first wall to the last ceiling board, and nobody gets to blame the crew that came before them.

Every family has a spot where the stories get told.

For some it is the kitchen table. For a lot of homes in Gqeberha it is outside, on the paving around the braai, where the fire gets lit late in the afternoon and the old men argue about sport until the coals die down.

On 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆, 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟰 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, South Africans celebrate where we come from: our languages, our food, our clothes and our music. So many of those celebrations end up outdoors, around a fire, with family close.

We spend our days looking after those spaces, cleaning, restoring and fixing up homes across the city. It means something to us to know what happens on them once the job is done.

The back door that never needs varnishing again. 🚪

This was a wooden stable door into the kitchen, and the weather had got to it. The varnish had 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 and faded unevenly across the boards. On timber, that means sanding it back and re-coating it before the damp gets into the wood, and then doing it all again a few winters later.

So the old door came out and a 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 went into the same opening.

Outside, it sits clean against the face brick, and there is nothing left to sand or varnish.
Inside, the old door was solid wood from top to bottom. The new one has 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 in the top half, so the kitchen gets daylight through the door and still keeps its privacy.

The brickwork and the doorway stayed exactly as they were. Only the maintenance went.

You could see daylight along the top of the wall in this room. 🌤️

That was the patio room when the crew started: 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, the roof sheets right above your head, and a gap where the wall stopped short of the roof. This is the Windy City. Wherever daylight gets in, the wind gets in too.

On a job like this the order of work matters. 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 went on first, because a ceiling is only as good as the roof above it. Then the 𝗰𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 went up underneath and the cornices were fitted, and the strip of daylight at the top of the wall is gone.

An open pergola looks lovely right up until the first winter rain comes straight through it. 🌧️

So on this patio the crew went up top. 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 went on over the old timber rafters and was fixed down screw by screw along the edge.

Then the part you see at the end. A 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 overhead, a smooth white ceiling with downlights, and warm light running up every timber pillar. Same patio, only now it still works on a cold, wet evening.

Two trades for one job is how a three day job turns into three weeks. 🔨

The carpenter finishes the patio roof and leaves, so you wait for the ceiling man. The ceiling man finishes and leaves, so you wait for a painter. Every hand over is another quote, another date, and another person who was not there to see what the last one did.
