Prolonged coronavirus lockdown will lead to rise in pests.

The coronavirus lockdown could have a serious effect on our native animal population as pest control is not considered an essential service for households but only food industries and public areas.

Autumn was a crucial time for pest control and if the lockdown is extended, pest control needs to be reclassified as an essential service.

Three-week break, while not ideal, will not have too bad of an effect as pest control is typically done every four weeks anyway.

We don't want to lose the gains we've made and there's one rule to success in pest control: consistency.

There are numerous pests that infest the human environment (rodents, flies, mosquitoes, stored product insects, cockroaches, ticks and fleas to name just some) and nearly all of them are vectors of disease. They can contaminate food and surfaces, or transmit diseases directly through their bites.

Pest control is an essential service for many businesses which are – in turn – critical for our health and well being during lock down. South Africans are relying on our essential services to ensure food safety and security, as well as safe healthcare.
