Shaggy and long-pile carpets are the "divas" of the flooring world - they look and feel luxurious, but their deep pile acts like a giant filter for dust, hair, and grit. Because the fibres are so long, gravity pulls dirt right to the base where a standard vacuum cannot reach.
It would be wise to apply this advice:
1. No "Be**er Bar" / Power brush: Never use a rotating brush on a long pile. It tangles the fibres and can "frizz" the yarn. Use the suction-only attachment.
2. The "Slow & Low" vacuum: Move the vacuum twice as slowly as you think you should. Long piles need more time for the airflow to pe*****te the base.
3. Gravity is your friend: If the rug is small enough, take it outside, hang it over a sturdy rail, and give it an "old-school" beating. This loosens the deep-seated grit that vacuuming misses.
4. The shake-out: For shaggy rugs, a vigorous shake once a week prevents the fibres from matting down and becoming "flat."
5. Blot, never rub: If a spill occurs, the long fibres will "wick" the liquid downward quickly. Blot immediately with a white towel to stop the liquid from reaching the backing.
6. Rotate monthly: Long pile shows "traffic lanes" very quickly. Rotate the rug every 30 days to ensure even wear and sun exposure.
7. Professional grooming: Encourage an annual Water Extraction clean. It is the only way to sanitise the base of the pile and "reset" the fibres' bounce.
