πβοΈ METEOROLOGICAL WINTER HAS ARRIVED IN SOUTH AFRICA βοΈπ
Today, 1 June, marks the official start of meteorological winter in South Africa.
Unlike astronomical winter, which begins around 21 June with the winter solstice, meteorological winter is defined as the three coldest months of the year: June, July, and August.
During this period, cold fronts become more frequent over the southern parts of the country, bringing rain to the Western Cape and often colder conditions across much of South Africa. Frosty mornings, widespread temperature drops, snowfalls over high-lying regions, and strong winter storms can all occur during the coming months.
While winter is often associated with clear, dry conditions over the interior, it can also produce some of the country's most impactful weather events, including severe cold outbreaks, disruptive winds, heavy rainfall, and significant snowfall.
What are you most looking forward to this winter β frost, snow, thunderstorms, or simply cooler weather?
