SANS 241 is South Africa's definitive legal benchmark for drinking water quality. It dictates the exact microbiological, chemical, physical, and aesthetic limits that water must meet to be considered safe for human consumption, cooking, or bathing.

Rather than just serving as a guideline, it is a strict legal requirement for municipalities, commercial properties, the food sector, and healthcare facilities. The standard evaluates water across several distinct groups, including strict zero-tolerance policies for pathogens like E. coli, safe concentration limits for heavy metals and nitrates, and operational standards like turbidity (water clarity).

Importantly, the framework was recently updated to SANS 241:2025, which shifts the national focus toward a more proactive, risk-based approach to water safety from catchment to tap. This new edition introduces explicit guidelines for borehole usage and regular testing protocols—a highly relevant update as more households and businesses move away from sole reliance on municipal supply
