As we approach the December holidays, it's crucial to be vigilant about water safety to prevent drowning incidents, which are sadly more prevalent during this time in South Africa. Here are some essential tips to keep your children safe:
1. Supervision: Always keep a close eye on children when they are near water. Never leave them unattended, even for a moment.
2. Swimming Lessons: Enrol your children in swimming lessons to ensure they are confident and capable in the water.
3. Safety Barriers: Install barriers around pools and ensure gates are self-closing and self-latching.
4. Life Jackets: Ensure children wear life jackets when around open water, such as lakes or the ocean.
5. Learn CPR: Knowing CPR can save a life. Take a course to be prepared in case of an emergency.
If you find your child or baby in a water source:
1. Remove Them from the Water: Immediately and safely remove the child from the water.
2. Check for Breathing: If the child is not breathing, begin CPR immediately and call emergency services.
3. Seek Medical Attention: Even if the child seems fine, seek medical attention as complications can arise later.
