Your pool turned green. Don't panic - and don't drain it. Green water is almost always algae - and it's fixable with the right steps.

Step one: test the water. You need to know exactly what's out of balance before you treat it.
Step two: shock it. A proper shock treatment raises chlorine levels rapidly and starts killing the algae.
Step three: add algaecide to target and eliminate what's left. Step four: brush every surface - walls, floor, steps. This breaks algae loose so your filter can catch it.
Step five: run the pump continuously and backwash the filter as pressure builds.
Step six: retest and balance until the water is clear and safe.

Just because no one's swimming doesn't mean your pump should be taking a break. ⚙️

Your pool pump is the heart of your water circulation system. In winter, running it for at least 4-6 hours daily:

✔️ Keeps water moving, preventing stagnation
✔️ Ensures chemicals are evenly distributed
✔️ Prevents the filter from clogging with settled debris
✔️ Reduces the chance of equipment damage from disuse

🏊 Surface staining and scaling from unbalanced water – resurfacing costs

Stagnant water is one of the most overlooked winter pool problems. 💧

When a pool isn't being used and circulation is reduced or switched off entirely, water stops moving - and still water is where bacteria, algae, and chemical imbalances thrive.

Even in winter, your pump should be running for several hours a day to keep water circulating and filtration working properly.

Don't ignore these warning signs this winter:

🟡 Cloudy or dull water – chemistry is off balance
🟢 Green or brown tint – algae is taking hold
⚪ White or grey deposits on surfaces – calcium scaling
🔵 Waterline ring – oils and minerals building up
💨 Unusual pump noises – equipment needs attention

Every one of these is easier (and cheaper) to fix early than to deal with when it's progressed.

Pool Fact: Algae doesn't hibernate in winter. 🌿

While cold water slows algae growth, it doesn't stop it - especially when chlorine levels drop and debris is left to break down.

In KwaZulu-Natal, our mild winters mean water temperatures rarely get cold enough to fully halt algae development. That means year-round vigilance is still essential.

The fix is simple: keep chlorine levels maintained, brush regularly, and don't let debris sit on the floor or walls.
