Scientists at Pennsylvania State University are developing an innovative way to recycle astronaut waste into food for long-duration space missions. Using a process called anaerobic digestion, microbes break down human waste into methane. Another microbe called Methylococcus capsulatus feeds on the methane and produces a protein and fat-rich biomass. The result is a safe and edible paste that could provide essential nutrients in deep space while also reducing waste.

The Biden administration released a highly anticipated analysis of the Colorado River crisis that paints a dire picture of what that river system's collapse would portend for the West's major cities, farmers and Native tribes.

Last week, the water level in Lake Mead was 1,044.3 feet, an increase of 3.8 feet in just over a month. Lake Mead had been at a new record low of 1,040.50 feet on July 28, 2022. This recent elevation gain corresponds to an increase of 265k acre-feet in storage, which is about the volume of water used by the state of Nevada in a year.

The increase is attributed to substantial monsoonal rain events in July and August, producing a greater inflow into Lake Mead. The water is coming from tributaries such as the Little Colorado River, Paria River, Virgin and Muddy Rivers, plus direct runoff between Glen Canyon Dam and Hoover Dam.

There has also been less demand on the river downstream. With an increase in soil moisture on farmland, less irrigation water has been diverted from the Colorado River, contributing to more water staying in Lake Mead.

While an increase of over 3 feet is excellent news, one month of wet conditions in the lower basin does not mean the basin-wide drought is over and we are no longer facing critical conditions in the basin. The vast majority of inflow into Lake Mead still comes from releases from Glen Canyon Dam, which is directly related to snowpack and spring runoff.

I am sad to share the loss of a truly wonderful colleague Steven Corr.
Steven was a supporter of Busse GT and was instrumental in helping get the approvals in the US. He was also a good friend.
He will be missed.
