House cleaning vs. housekeeping… wait, aren’t they the same thing? 🧹🤔

Not quite! And this is something I get asked about more often than you might think.

Think of it this way:

🧽 House Cleaning:
The goal is to get your home clean.
Dusting, vacuuming, mopping, bathrooms, kitchens, wiping surfaces, floors, and all those little details that make your home feel fresh and tidy.

🧺 Housekeeping / Maid Services:
The focus can be more on general household upkeep. Depending on the service, this may include laundry, dishes, organizing, putting things away, errands, meal prep, and other day-to-day household tasks.

There can definitely be some overlap between the two, but they aren't necessarily the same service.

At Wishy Washi, my specialty is professional residential cleaning, that is tailored to each homes needs. I love taking a home that needs some attention and leaving it clean, fresh, and ready for you to enjoy. ✨

Basically… you handle the living, I’ll handle the cleaning. 😉

Pillows. Let's chat.

They need to be cleaned too. And I don’t mean the pillowcase.

Over time pillows collect:
🦠 Sweat
🦠 Body oils
🦠 Dust
🦠 Allergens

…and this build up can happen in just a few months!

Signs your pillows need attention:
👉 Lingering odor
👉 Yellowing
👉 Flattening/lumpiness
👉 They no longer feel fresh after bedding is changed

So, how often should pillows be cleaned/replaced?
‼️ every 3-6 months!

Yes - many pillows can be washed. [ALWAYS check the care tag first, some materials should not be machine washed]

One of the biggest mistakes that are made when washing pillows is not fully drying them.

Even the slightest moisture trapped inside can lead to musty smells and mildew.

Here’s what helps:
🛏️ Wash 2 pillows at a time to balance the washer
🛏️ Use a gentle cycle with a small amount of detergent
🛏️ Run an extra spin cycle to remove as much water as possible
🛏️ Dry on low heat
🛏️ Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help them dry evenly and keep their shape
🛏️ Make sure they are COMPLETELY dry before putting them back on the bed

Let’s talk about vacuums!

You can usually tell within a few minutes if a vacuum hasn’t been cleaned in a while. 👇

👀 It leaves debris behind, even after going over the same spot
👀 The airflow feels week
👀 The roller isn’t performing well
👀 A smell is left behind after vacuuming

What needs attention:
🧹 The canister. Empty it after each use. Wash it with soap and water every few weeks. Dust tends to build but even with emptying it with each use.
🧹 The filter. Most should be cleaned or replaced every few weeks design on use. A dirty filter = dusty air blowing right back out.
🧹 The roller. Hair wraps around it quickly. If it’s clogged, it is not picking up much at all.

�✨✨ Most vacuums should be deep cleaned every 1-3 months. A lot of vacuums come apart more than you may think in order to properly clean them. ✨✨

How often you should REALLY clean these 5 things in your home 👇

These often get overlooked, or cleaned way less often than they should be.

1. Vacuum (filter + brush roll)
👉 About every 2–4 weeks
If you skip this, your vacuum starts pushing dust back out instead of picking it up.

2. Pillows (not the cases—the actual pillows)
👉 Every 3–6 months
They collect sweat, oils, and dust way faster than you’d expect. If yours feel a little “off,” this is usually why.

3. Kitchen sponge
👉 Every 1–2 weeks (sooner if it smells)
This is one of the easiest things to forget… and also one of the quickest to grow bacteria.

4. Baseboards
👉 Every 1–2 months
You don’t notice them day to day, but when they’re dusty, the whole room feels less clean; even if everything else is spotless.

5. Bathroom exhaust fan
👉 Every 3–6 months
When this gets clogged with dust, bathrooms hold onto moisture longer than they should. That’s where you start running into that damp feeling.
