Another busy day for Michigan Mitigation in Dundee, Michigan!

This visit wasn’t for water damage. We were there helping a homeowner give their home a thorough cleaning. Our crew cleaned the home’s ductwork, professionally cleaned an area rug, and deep cleaned their sectional couch.

It’s nice being able to handle several cleaning services in one visit and save the homeowner from scheduling multiple companies.

With all the heavy rain and storms we’ve had lately, your sump pump has been working overtime.

Your sump pump collects groundwater around your foundation and pumps it away from your home before it reaches your basement. During heavy rainfall, the sump crock can fill much faster than normal.

Sump pumps fail for several reasons:
• The pump gets overwhelmed by too much water
• Power goes out during a storm
• The float or pump stops working
• The discharge line becomes blocked
• The pump simply reaches the end of its life

When it fails or falls behind, the sump crock overflows and water starts spreading across your basement. Carpet, drywall, flooring, insulation, and other building materials can quickly become affected.

If your sump pump struggled to keep up or you already have water in your basement, Michigan Mitigation is ready to help with water extraction, structural drying, cleanup, and restoration.

We work with homeowners with or without insurance coverage.

Another great carpet cleaning in Ypsilanti!

This carpet had some heavily soiled areas and several noticeable spots when we arrived. After a thorough professional cleaning, the difference speaks for itself. The carpet cleaned up beautifully, and the homeowner was extremely happy with the results.

If your carpet is looking a little rough, don’t assume it needs to be replaced. A professional cleaning might surprise you.

We were honored to be part of this year's Hug A Home project in Belleville.

Our crew had the privilege of removing and replacing three windows, along with installing new window jambs and casing to help make this home safer, more comfortable, and ready for its deserving family.

This project is made possible each year through the generosity of YES Communities, Turning Point Companies, and many dedicated crews, contractors, suppliers, and volunteers who come together to give back. Seeing so many people donate their time, skills, and resources year after year is what makes Hug A Home such a meaningful tradition.

We're grateful to have worked alongside everyone involved and are proud to play a small part in helping make a family's home a better place.

Have you checked your homeowner's insurance lately?

Many homeowners assume water damage from a sump pump failure is automatically covered. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

Most standard homeowner's policies require a separate sump pump or water backup endorsement. Without it, you could be responsible for thousands of dollars in cleanup, drying, repairs, and replacing damaged belongings.

We've responded to many flooded basements where the damage could have been covered if the proper endorsement had been added to the policy.

Take five minutes this week to call your insurance agent and ask one simple question:

"Do I have sump pump and water backup coverage?"

That small conversation could save you thousands of dollars if your sump pump ever fails during a heavy rain.

At Michigan Mitigation, we're available 24/7 to respond to flooded basements throughout Southeast Michigan. If water finds its way into your home, we'll help you dry the structure, prevent mold growth, and get your home back to normal as quickly as possible.

Why do restoration companies drill holes in drywall after a basement floods?

It seems backwards, doesn't it?

One of the most common questions we hear is why we drill small holes along the bottom of drywall instead of immediately cutting it out.

The answer is simple.

Drywall doesn't always need to be removed.

If the drywall and insulation are still salvageable, those small holes allow warm, dry air to circulate inside the wall cavity where moisture gets trapped. That speeds up drying while minimizing unnecessary demolition.

Day 1 of this basement water damage project.

A failed sump pump flooded the finished basement. Today our crew removed the affected carpet, detached the baseboards, built containment to protect the rest of the home, and began structural drying.

Our goal is always to save as much of the home as possible while creating the best drying environment.

The first 24 to 48 hours are critical after a water loss. The sooner the drying process begins, the greater the chance of minimizing damage and avoiding unnecessary demolition.

Sump pump failures don’t always mean your basement has to be completely gutted.

On this project, the homeowner chose to remove the carpet, but we were able to save the drywall and trim by starting the drying process quickly. We also built containment to keep the rest of the home clean while the basement dried.

Every water loss is different. The sooner the damage is evaluated, the more materials you may be able to save.

If you have water in your home, don’t wait. Early action often makes all the difference.
