🌟 2026 Rising Star Award | Brandon Lockhart

We're kicking off our 2026 employee award recognitions with Brandon Lockhart of Mitchell, South Dakota!

Our Rising Star Award is a peer-nominated recognition for newer team members who have quickly made a positive impact at Olson's Pest Technicians.

Brandon joined our team in May, giving him just a few months to make an impression before nominations were submitted. And clearly, he made a strong one!

His coworkers recognized his organization, preparation, willingness to learn, and the way he interacts with customers. He's quickly earned the respect of those around him and established himself as a valuable member of our field team.

🍂 ASK OLSON'S: Should I treat for fall invaders now, or wait for freezing temperatures?

It's November, but we're still experiencing plenty of mild fall weather across our region. With those warmer temperatures, boxelder bugs, Asian lady beetles, cluster flies, and other fall invaders can remain active around our homes and businesses.

So, is it worth treating now, or should you just wait for winter?

Freezing temperatures generally slow down outdoor pest activity, but they don't necessarily eliminate pests that have already found their way into protected areas of your home.

And as we know, we may not have a hard freeze until the middle of December... or we could have 6 inches of snow next week!

If you're seeing significant activity around your home, waiting for winter isn't necessarily your best option.

A great couple of days with the Olson's team in Yankton!

This week, we brought our team together from across the region for our annual Fall Business Development Meeting (BDM).

With a team spread across several states, these meetings are an important opportunity to get everyone together, learn from one another, and spend time developing the skills that help us better serve our customers.

Over the two days, our team participated in technical training, breakout sessions, and discussions covering everything from quality control and commercial pest management to field safety, leadership, and customer service.

As Olson's continues to grow, we believe it's important to keep investing in the people who make that growth possible.

Professional development isn't something that happens just once when someone joins our team. It's an ongoing part of getting better at what we do.

And it wasn't all classroom time!

Wednesday evening, we gathered at The Boat House - Yankton for our social and inaugural employee awards, recognizing team members for their contributions to Olson's, our customers, and the communities we serve. We also enjoyed some friendly competition, trivia, and time to connect with coworkers we don't always get to see.

We'll be highlighting our award winners individually over the coming weeks!

We're proud of our team and the culture we're building together. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's BDM a success!

Last week, several members of our Olson's team traveled to Dallas for PestWorld 2026, the National Pest Management Association's annual conference.

PestWorld is an opportunity to learn from others in our industry, attend educational sessions, explore new technology and equipment, and bring new ideas back to Olson's.

As our company continues to grow, it's important that we continue learning and improving along the way. That means investing in our people, giving them opportunities to develop their skills, and staying involved in the industry we're proud to be part of.

We were also fortunate to have several members of our team on stage to celebrate Ryan receiving the NPMA Emerging Leader Award!

It was a great week in Dallas, and we're looking forward to putting what we learned to work back home.

🐭 PEST MYTH

MYTH: If I have mice, my house must be dirty.

FACT: Even clean, well-maintained homes can have mice.

There's a little truth behind this myth, but it's not quite that simple.

Cluttered or poorly maintained environments can absolutely create ideal conditions for rodents. Accessible food, nesting material, clutter and areas that remain undisturbed give mice more opportunities to feed, hide and reproduce. We've been in homes where those conditions have contributed significantly to a rodent problem.
But we've also found mice in some incredibly clean, well-maintained homes.

Mice aren't necessarily coming inside because a home is dirty. They're looking for the same basic things every animal needs: food, water and shelter. As temperatures cool, a warm home with a small opening can provide exactly what they're looking for.

That's why effective rodent control looks at the entire environment. How are they getting inside? Where are they traveling? What food or shelter is available? Are there conditions around the property helping support the activity?

Sanitation and reducing clutter can be important parts of rodent management, but keeping a clean house doesn't make your home mouse-proof.
Sometimes all it takes is the right opening and a mouse looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter. 🐭

🐭 ASK OLSON'S: How do I know if I have mice?
Seeing a mouse is an obvious sign. But often, mice leave clues behind long before you actually see one.
Droppings, gnaw marks, damaged food packaging, nesting material and scratching sounds in walls or ceilings can all indicate rodent activity.
Here's one you may not know to look for.
See the dark staining around the opening in this photo? As rodents repeatedly travel through the same openings and along the same routes, oils and dirt from their fur can leave dark rub marks on the surfaces they contact.
For a pest management professional, clues like these can help tell the story. Where are the rodents traveling? Where are they getting inside? Where are they finding food, water or shelter?
Effective rodent control isn't just about catching the mouse you see. It's about understanding why it's there and how it got there in the first place.
As temperatures cool, we're already seeing an increase in rodent activity around homes and businesses.

🏠 Sometimes solving the pest problem is only the beginning.

Take a look at the before and after photos from a recent attic restoration completed by our team.

Pest activity can leave behind more than the pest itself. In this attic, there was significant evidence of rodent activity, including droppings throughout the existing insulation.

Once the pest problem has been addressed, Olson's can take the next step with attic restoration. Depending on the conditions, that can include removing affected insulation and debris, cleaning and sanitizing the attic, and installing new insulation.

For this home, we installed T.A.P.® Pest Control Insulation.
T.A.P. stands for Thermal, Acoustical and Pest Control. It's a cellulose insulation that provides thermal and sound-reduction benefits while also incorporating an EPA-registered pesticide designed to control many common household insects.

It's another example of how pest management can go beyond simply controlling what's there today. Sometimes it's about addressing what pests left behind and helping protect the home moving forward.

From the Field

🐝 Not every insect is a pest. And good pest control shouldn't treat them like one.
These bumblebees were busy working flowers while our team was in the field in late September.

Pollinators play an important role in the ecosystems and agricultural systems we all depend on. Protecting them is one of the reasons responsible pest management is about much more than simply applying pesticides.

At Olson's, we practice Integrated Pest Management, or IPM. That means identifying the pest we're actually trying to control, understanding where it's active, and targeting treatments where they're needed rather than unnecessarily treating everything around it.

When pesticides are necessary, proper product selection, application methods and treatment locations can help reduce unnecessary exposure to pollinators and other non-target organisms.

Sometimes the best pest control decision is knowing where not to treat.
That's better pest management for our customers and the environment around them. 🐝

Congratulations to Dalton Bornholdt on his promotion to Director of Operations!

Dalton has served as one of our Regional Managers and has continued to take on more responsibility across Olson's as we've grown.

In his new role as Director of Operations, Dalton will oversee our field operations and work closely with our regional leadership and PMPs. His focus will be on supporting our people, improving how we operate and making sure we have the structure and accountability needed as Olson's continues to grow.

Dalton knows our operation, knows our people and understands what it takes to serve our customers well. We're excited to have him take on this larger role within Olson's.
