We hear this more often than you'd think:

"I only saw one cockroach."

Seeing one cockroach doesn't automatically mean you have a major infestation, but it shouldn't be ignored either.

Cockroaches spend most of their time hiding in cracks, behind appliances, inside cabinets, wall voids, and other protected areas. They're primarily active at night, so finding one during the day can sometimes indicate there is more activity than you realize.

The good news? Catching a problem early is much easier than waiting until it grows.

Not every cockroach is the same, either. German, American, Oriental, and wood cockroaches all behave differently, which is why proper identification is the first step in determining the best treatment.

If you've found a cockroach in your home or business, don't panic, but don't assume it's the only one.

What pest myth should we bust next?

PEST SPOTLIGHT: CICADA KILLER WASPS

We get quite a few calls about these every summer, and honestly, they're one of the most misunderstood insects we encounter.

Despite their size, we typically do not recommend treatment.

Here's why.

A female cicada killer digs a burrow in dry, sandy soil. She then hunts cicadas, paralyzes them, carries them back to the burrow, lays an egg on them, seals the chamber, and repeats the process several times. The larvae feed on the cicadas, spend the winter underground, and emerge as adults the following summer. The adults you're seeing now will only be around for a few weeks before their life cycle ends.

They're also surprisingly difficult to treat. Most of the time, the female isn't sitting in the burrow waiting to be sprayedโ€”she's out hunting cicadas. By the time many people notice them, they're already well into their short summer activity period.

The good news is they're solitary wasps, not social wasps like yellowjackets. They aren't defending a colony, and females rarely sting unless they're handled. The males may fly toward you to investigate, but they don't even have a stinger.

We saw dozens of them on local golf courses this week, which is completely normal this time of year.

Sometimes the best pest control recommendation is simply letting nature run its course.

ASK OLSON'S

Do You Really Only Need Exterior Pest Control?

Short answer: It depends.

At Olson's Pest Technicians, we believe in treating the right areas, at the right time, for the right reason.

For most homes, that means focusing on the exterior. Most pests originate outside, so treating the foundation, entry points, and exterior of the home helps stop them before they ever get inside. It's a more proactive approach that also reduces the need to apply products inside your living space.

That doesn't mean interior treatments have gone away.

For recurring customers on preventative maintenance program, when interior activity from a covered pest is present, we'll perform a targeted interior treatment at no additional charge as part of your regular service. We simply don't believe in treating areas that don't need to be treated.

Commercial properties are different.

Restaurants, healthcare facilities, warehouses, offices, food processing facilities, and many other commercial accounts have unique risks and operating environments. That's why commercial pest management often includes routine interior inspections and treatments as needed.

Whether it's a home or a business, our goal is the same:

We're not paid to apply more products. We're trusted to solve pest problems.

Our Quarterly Home Protection Program, with convenient monthly subscription billing starting at $57 per month for qualified homes, is designed to keep pest issues out of sight and out of mind.

Have a question you'd like us to answer in a future Ask Olson's post? Leave it in the comments.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

This past weekend was a great reminder of what makes our communities special.

Our Mitchell team had a blast participating in the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Parade, where they earned 1st Place in the Humorous Division with a float designed by Dwight Boehmer and the team. Congratulations to everyone who helped bring it together!

Back home in Yankton, Olson's Pest Technicians was proud to sponsor a hole and have a team participate in the 10th Annual Chopper Johnson Foundation Golf Tournament, supporting an organization that continues to make a positive impact in our community.

Whether it's volunteering, sponsoring local events, or showing up for our neighbors, we're proud to support the communities that have supported Olson's for over 60 years.

Thank you to everyone who organized, volunteered, and participated in both events!

PEST SPOTLIGHT

Mosquito

Most people think about mosquitoes once they're getting bitten.

The real battle starts long before that.

This photo shows mosquito larvae developing in standing water. It doesn't take much. A bucket, bird bath, clogged gutter, flower pot saucer, old tire, or even a toy left outside after a rain can become a breeding site.

One of the best things you can do around your home is take a few minutes each week to dump standing water and remove places where mosquitoes can reproduce.
A few minutes of prevention now can save you a lot of swatting later.
If mosquitoes are keeping you from enjoying your yard, professional mosquito treatments can make a big difference throughout the summer. Olson's Pest Technicians offers both chemical and non-chemical treatment options.

FROM THE FIELD

Not every surprise on the job has six legs.

During a recent service, Jayce, one of our Pest Management Professionals, opened a routine exterior rodent bait station and found this rattlesnake taking advantage of a cool, protected place to rest.

Rodent bait stations do not attract snakes, but properties with rodent activity can also attract predators looking for their next meal. It's one more reminder that pest management is about understanding the entire environment around a home or business.

Fortunately, our technician recognized the situation, handled it safely, and the customer was left with one less surprise around their property.

You never know what you'll find in the field!

ASK OLSON'S

How can I prevent bed bugs?

This question hits a little differently after a recent experience of my own.

A few weeks ago, I sat down on a restaurant barstool. On the drive home, my wife noticed a bed bug crawling on my shirt. Thankfully, it never made it into our home... although she was about ready to have me fumigate the house anyway.

It was a good reminder that bed bugs can be picked up almost anywhere. They don't care if a place is clean or dirty. They're excellent hitchhikers and can show up in hotels, restaurants, movie theaters, schools, offices, apartments, public transportation, and many other places people gather.

While there's no way to eliminate the risk entirely, you can reduce your chances by:

โ€ข Inspecting hotel rooms before unpacking.
โ€ข Keeping luggage off beds and upholstered furniture while traveling.
โ€ข Being cautious when bringing used furniture or mattresses into your home.
โ€ข Inspecting clothing, backpacks, purses, and luggage after travel or time spent in high traffic public places.
โ€ข Contacting a pest professional if you suspect bed bugs. Early identification can make a significant difference.

The biggest takeaway? Bed bugs don't discriminate. A little awareness goes a long way toward keeping them from becoming a problem in your home.

What pest question should we answer next in our Ask Olson's series?

PEST MYTH

MYTH: Bed bugs only infest dirty homes.

FACT: Bed bugs don't care if a home is spotless or messy. They're attracted to people, not cleanliness.

This photo was taken in the field by Olson's Pest Management Professional, Cherri, while servicing a customer in the Black Hills region.

Bed bugs are found in all 50 states, including South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota. They don't discriminate and can be brought home by anyone.

Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons, which also means more opportunities for bed bugs to hitch a ride home in luggage, backpacks, clothing, or used furniture. Hotels, vacation rentals, movie theaters, schools, and even public transportation can all be places where bed bugs are picked up.

The good news? Getting bed bugs has nothing to do with how clean you keep your home. Early identification and professional treatment are the keys to getting them under control quickly.

Have a pest myth you've always wondered about? Leave it in the comments and it might be featured in a future Pest Myth post.

FROM THE FIELD

This photo shows thousands of termites actively feeding on a Sentriconยฎ bait station at one of our customer's homes in Aberdeen, SD. Yes, termites are that far north!

Believe it or not, this is exactly what we want to see.

The termites have found the bait before finding more of the home. As they feed and share the bait with the rest of the colony, the system works to eliminate the colony at its source.

Most termite damage happens long before homeowners ever realize there's a problem. That's why routine inspections and preventative protection are so important.

We offer both preventative termite protection and active termite treatments to help protect one of your biggest investments.

Have questions about termites or termite protection? We'd be happy to help.
