The smoke was pretty thick in Wilkes-barre today. Usually we can see all the way to the other side of The Valley, yes I capitalized “The Valley” out of respect.

Anyway, it’s pretty wild.

The year is 1999. It’s 72 degrees on a perfect spring day in Pennsylvania and your entire weekend starts at Gallery of Sound.

You walk in with maybe $25 in your pocket and leave feeling like you own the world. A brand new CD you’ve been waiting months for. Maybe a poster for your bedroom wall. Maybe your friend made a burned copy that they swear is “even better.”

After that it’s straight to grab a tray of square pizza and an ice cold bottle of Cherikee Red before heading to the mall later that night where literally everybody from school somehow ends up at the exact same time.

Nobody’s texting. Nobody’s sharing locations. You had to actually make plans and stick to them. “Meet by the food court at 7” meant exactly that. If somebody was late, you just wandered around until you found them.

The parking lots were packed. The stereos were loud. Everybody had JNCOs, chain wallets, frosted tips, Yankees hats, Adidas tearaways, or an Allen Iverson jersey somewhere in the mix.

And for a few hours, life honestly felt simple.

A completely different era. What a time to be alive.

Honestly the “kids” (employees) give me this stuff and I find it kind of fascinating. As a millennial I know we had our “slang” but these gen Z’ers are something else. Also, I had to download Tiktok to see it and they're teaching me how to use it.
